Subject: Changing Gears What do these codes mean?

OK. I’ve got the bucks for a 4.11 or 4.56 gear swaps, but what is in my 2002 QC AWD 4x4. If someone can tell me where to decode the markings on the differentials, I'll know what gears to order. The front is 12 Bolt C205F which I think is the Corporate 205 mm front? Im not sure what the rear is... it is a 10 bolt 8.25 N-TRV is this a Corporate diff also?

Thanks CC

go to accuautoparts.com

They have a good lookup. When you select the axle you think you have, it gives a descrition and what to look for in marking, etc.

I'd think you would have the 9.25 like my 2003 4WD, but maybe not. Both diffs are listed on the site for that year.

The 8 1/4 rear was commonly used in the AWD models as the rear will never see all of the torque by itself. Both the 8 1/4 and the 9 1/4 are called corporate as they are made by mopar.
You have the official designation for the front, some sites will call it 8" corporate, or something similar.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

This makes me think... For MY 2005 the Dakota's rear end in all engine and driveline choices became the 8.25" axle. On the 2004 Durango I have seen 8.25" and 9.25" rear ends (mostly 8.25") even with the 5.7L V8. Has DCX decided that the 8.25" axle can take all the weight and power they though only the 9.25" axle could handle previously?

For confirmation, my 02 QC AWD also has the C205/8.25 front/rear diff setup.

I had assumed early on that the 8.25 was "sufficent" (from a Dodge engineering point of view) due to the AWD torque split.

Keep us (me!) informed on the gear swap. I have thought about it, but can't quite justify the cost for parts and labor. For me, diff and auto trans work always go to knowledgable sources, so the cost is quite high for an AWD setup.

look on the inside of the glove box door. there is a sticker that tells exactly what frontend and rear end that you have as well as the gearing and limited slip.

I kept wrestling with 4.11 or 4.56. After talking with a few specialists and the folks here, I went with the 4.56. This way I should have enough gear for the current 33s and the 35s next go around. I ordered them today and should be delivered early next week. I'll udate in a few weeks.
