Subject: Sqeeky... Belt?
IP: Logged

Message:
my dakota (1996 v6 magnum 3.9liter) has been what sounds like sqeeking from the engine around my belt or fan.

i had the belt replaced about 3 months ago and a coolant flush shortly after. i sprayed silicone on the belt and it's a temporary fix, but the sqeeking has came back.

a friend of mine said it could be a bearing, but i know very little about engines. (more of a wireing/sound/general performance kinda guy)

being i'm 19 and have a $7/hr job i'm hoping the fix won't run me into the ground.

feedback?

Check to see if the belt tensioner is working.
Grab the belt and pull hard, then let go. Do that 2-3 times. The tensioner should MOVE and return to make the belt tight.
And don't use silicone on the belt. You can clean the belt with mild soap and water.

Had that problem and it turned out to be the idler pulley, and the belt tensioner pulley bearings. I replaced(entire assemblies) both for $50.

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

a friend of mine (his dad is a small time hobbist) told me that's what he thought it was.

i by far would have no idea what i was doing.. how much do you think that could run me at a shop?

i would think it'd be the idler pulley and possibly a bearing/s

it only has a bad squeak when i don't have my foot on the gas/accelerating when i am, it sounds fine.

although i could be wrong, i hope that helps.

The bearings that squeak are parts of the idler and tensioner pulley assemblies(the pulleys ride on and are attached to the bearing). It does take alot of mechanical aptitude to change these things either. Take tension off the tensioner pulley, pull the belt out of the way remove the bolts that hold each pulley on, replace each pulley, replacing the removed bolt, reroute the belt, and VIOLA! No more squeaky pulley:)

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Sorry about my last post, it was supposed to say "DOESN'T take alot of mechanical aptitude".

ch312- that may work for a little while, but all you are doing is putting a bandaid on the problem. You are really washing the grease out of the bearing, and eventually it will fail(like filling your engine with hydraulic fluid).

If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

i hope you didn't use WD-40 that will just eat all the grease and like the guy above me stated that your just putting a bandaid on the problem.

I went through the same thing recently. Not only did the tensioner lose all its spring but the bearings were shot. Not expensive and only a few minutes to change, just as cuzindoug described. Once it was changed, the squeaking was gone.
