Hello Everyone,
I own a 99 Dodge dokata sport 5.9L reg. cab short bed.
I live in IL. I'm going to move to CA. I'm towing a 6 by 12 foot trailer. With a clas 3 hitch. the total wieght with trailer will be 4300 pounds. I will be driving 2055 miles. I was woundering if you think my truck will do fine in the rockys. Is this a good idea or no? Do you think i'll make it up the rockys? Please respound.

ummmmm, do you have the quad cab or the r/t? cause those are the only ones with the 5.9L. if its the r/t, i'd probably say you shouldnt do it. if its the quad cab, shouldnt be a problem.

OK, correct me if I'm wrong here...... I didn't think the quad cab was introduced until '00. In '99 I thought the only way to get the 5.9 was in the R/T package. Regardless of the actual package - the 5.9 or 5.2 will tow 4300 lbs just fine. It's the rest of the truck you have to be careful with. If you load the trailer properly, it shouldn't be a problem. Keep in mind that unless the trailer has brakes on it, the truck will be a handful if you need to stop suddenly. I've towed in excess of 6,000 lbs with both my previous R/T and also my 4.7 sport. Neither of them had a problem, you just have to take your time and not get in a hurry. Going up hill will be the easy part. Going downhill is where the lighter weight truck like the Dakota can get into trouble.........be careful!

What about the big recall on 99 R/T s towing rating. Rated at 5 or 6 thousand or something and then the recall say only 2500. Not exaclty sure about those #s but I have the recall paperwork around here somewhere.

charles, would you maybe willing to accept 13-14K for a 00 R/T? There is a rare yellow RC R/T for sale on this forum right now.
