Subject: weird grinding noise @ 1800 RPMs...

'93 Dak 3.9l CC auto w/ 3.55s if it helps any

but whenever im cruising with barely any throttle around 40
mph with the O/D off this strange grinding noise comes on and
off as the RPM meter is in the neighborhood of 1800...

any replys would be greatly appreciated

detontation in a nutshell is when your motor runs at a higher tempurature than normal (combustion chamber) and the exhaust valve gets so hot that it actually causes the fuel-air mixture to ignite before the piston gets to TDC.

if your engine makes a pinging noise than it could be detonating at the wrong time. if it was detonating wrong than i dont think it would do it at 1800rpm more like at 3000rpm and above.

it could have to do with the tranny if it only happens with the O/D off. i would have the tranny drain and looked at by a trans guy you trust. have the rear end fluid changed.
