Subject: Which gears and locker?
IP: Logged

Message:
Out of these choices for 4.10 rear gears, which is best? Accu Value for $176.70, Motive Gear for $182.59, Precision Gear for $266.00, Richmond Gear for $286.26, or Yukon Gear for $216.96??? Also, would I be better off with a limited-slip, or a locker? Auburn, Detroit or Powertrax? I have a '02 Quad Cab, 2WD, 4.7L. Thanks.

Richmond is an excelent gear set and the price reflects that. I know people have gotten the Yukon set and liked them as well. I would stay away from the Accuvalue unless you know someone a few people that have used them and are satisfied.

The limited slip / locker question all depends on what you used the truck for. If you are just looking for some added traction in the rain or snow, go with the limited slip. Thats what I have in my 4x4 and rarely use 4x4 for anything less than extreme mud or snow. The locker tends to be more for extreme offroading, which you may or may not try and do in a super long and heavy 2 wheel drive truck. A locker is also good for pulling boats out of the water. Some times a slipery launch can be too much for a limited slip.

i have a powertrax no-slip locker in my dakota and i never even notice its back there. locker tech has come a long way. the limited slip is just a 1/2 a$$ wanna-be anymore. limited slips wear out lockers dont(or not nearly as fast)

Open, LSD, and Locker all have their place. And each one is somewhat of a compromise, unless you use your truck for one thing only. You need to analyze your driving and pick the best one for you.

I certaily wouldn't consider LSD as a "1/2a$$ wannabe". It's a good choice for a regularly driven truck that sees a fair amount of snow and ice on the street and some light off roading. Lockers are terrible in that environment.

OTOH, a locker is great for boat ramps, mud, and heavy off roading. They have come a long way, and don't have the noise and rough ride they used to have. Lockers are also terrible on a road course or high speed track. For a street driven truck that does not see snow/ice but occasionally hits the boat ramp or trail, an air locker would be the perfect choice.

It's all about comprimise.

Oh, and as for gears, I would use Precision or Richmond. You get what you pay for. And both of these companies have an excellent reputation with the drag racing crowd.

I'll vote for the Precision gears, I've used them and they're worth the price.
Last 2 4x4's I owned had LSD's in the front, Detroit Lockers in the back. Makes for a serious 4x4, but as others have said, that combo make for a seriously difficult to drive vehicle in snowy/icy conditions. It has a steep learning curve with little room for error.
