Subject: 318 question
IP: Logged

Message:
Ok I've read the posts and I can't find all my answers. First of all I'm looking for a rebuilt 318 so I can swap out my 3.9 and I can find a decent site. Mines a 2000 and I want to keep the MPI system. I would like a 360 but I have yet to find anything saying they can be MPI...all I see is carburated and I dont want to mess with that. I want a simple swap. I know I should really swap tranny too but is it at all possible not to kill it with the 318? Basically I just want to know where I can find a rebuilt 318 for my 2000 and since I'm gonna be in the military soon how much is a shop gonna cost me. All posts I've manage to find are all older trucks....89-94. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Either 318 or 360 can be MPI, and were....since 1992 the 318 (5.2 Magnum) and 1993 for the 360 (5.9 Magnum). Any Magnum 5.2 or 5.9 will bolt up, but 1996 or newer would be much easier since you have a 2000. Prior to 1996, their computers were OBDI and the engines had EGR, 1996 and newer are OBDII and do not have EGR, so for simplicity, go '96 or newer. Either will run with the V6 tranny, just don't go out to the track with slicks and hammer it. You didn't say auto or manual, but with the automatic the flexplate interchanges. If a 5.9, the flexplate will need balance weight added to it...easily handled by any legit machine shop. The torque converter will have to be a V8 unit for the MPI to function (it has a built-in exciter ring that the crank sensor reads). If a stick tranny, you will need an engine-specific flywheel, either 5.2 or 5.9, again due to the external balance requirements of the 5.9.
The easiest way is to order a drop-in ready crate MPI engine from Mopar Performance. You will also need a V8 computer and engine harness. It can be done, and has been, but having said that, it's usually less costly (you're talking serious bucks just for parts, even if you score a used engine....not to mention shop rates), and much less time-consuming to dump the V6 model and buy a V8-equipped truck. All the work is already done, and you get a stronger tranny.

If I could dump my truck and by a new one I would. But I just bought it in January and trust me I wanted the V8 but the only one's in my area I couldn't get financed for. I'm only 20 so credit wise I got nothin to show for. I got what I could and now I want to make it stronger. I figured I would need a new tranny and rearend so while I'm doing that I'll just get new gears too. Right now I just have 3.55's. My trucks 4wd and a 5spd. If my tranny's strong enough I could just drive that for a while until I find one. I would like to do it myself but I dont know enough to be confident in doin it myself plus being in the military I'm probably not gonna have really the time or space to do this. My big concern is wiring, since the motors basically built already anyways. If I'm wrong please correct me. I wont start this project for probably another 8 months since I have to wait until I'm out of my first school to get half my signing bonus. Any more help would be really helpful. Just trying to get things straight in advance.

OK here's what I'm thinking now. I'm going into this completely blind because I just haven't had the time or really opportunity to get down and dirty with an enigine and I'm not confident enough to rebuild my own. Most I had to do was change a front oil main on my '91 Nissan V6 and change the head on my old '89 Grand Am. So would it just be cheaper and a lot easier for me to get a Crate 360? I've decided since I'm gonna buy new might as well go all the way instead of halfway there. But I just want the stock 360 I dont want the performance one becuase of my budget. Does anyone know a site to get just a regular 360 like the R/T? Later when I have the money I can just do my mods slowly. I wont go too insane because this is still my daily driver. I figure this all in all will still be cheaper than trying to get my V6 up to 250-300 hp. Engine, built tranny (since R/T's are Auto's), and new rearend? One more question...what about my transfer case and front diff?

Just keep surfing the Dodge boards. Eventually you will run across a deal. I picked up a 360 with 30k miles for $500+shipping earlier this year, which was a great deal. Alternately, you can also look at some of the motor rebuilders in your area. Here in DFW there is a good shop that sells complete 318/360s for around $2100 installed with warranty. Not bad at all. If you do it yourself you can pick up a longblock for a little over $1k, or a shortblock for even less.

There was also a guy on ebay selling reman engines at good prices. It was a shop in Houston, TX, but I can't remember their name right now.

'00 - '03(not sure) Quad Cabs could be bought w/ 5.9's. if you could find a donor truck that would work. if you want to avoid a few extra headaches, either go w/ a 5.2, so you can keep the manual, or go w/ 5.9 & auto. you couldn't get a 5.9 in a dak w/ manual trans.

IMO, since you've got 4x4 & manual i'd go 5.2 and stay with the manual trans. everything from your 3.9 would bolt right on to it. and you can make a pretty stout 5.2. besides, manuals are much more fun.

Wow you guys just made me a whole lot happier. So does the tranny and rearend not have to be switched as long as your nice to it or can you get up on it and actually not break anything. As far as I know everythings running great so keeping them would be nice other than I'm gonna change gears and get the 3.92's. I know my mileage will drop but what are lower gears going to do to me? I know a 360 will cost me alot more because tranny and rearend will have to be changed but what if I got one out of a Ram? Couldn't I keep the manual. I don't want an automatic I enjoy playing around.

It's like I said. As long as you're not slamming it, the driveline will be fine.
One thing, while everything from the V6 will bolt up, you will still need the 5.2 flywheel due to the MPI issue. The V6 flywheel has 6 "windows", the 5.2 has 8 "windows" for 8 cylinders. Just be sure it matches the engine. 5.2 is a zero-balance like the 3.9, but the 5.9 has weight added to achieve balance.
Yes, you can use the tranny out of a Ram. The rear is the least of your worries. 8 1/4 rears were used in all sorts of heavy Mopar land-yachts, and 2WD Ranchargers, also Vans, and they hold up just fine.

Yea I know there's no way I'm not gunna get up on it but can my tranny handle that? My buddies got the same exact setup as you. You just got a heavy truck. Sad to say I raced him in my old '91 Nissan 4x4 V6 and was ahead the whole time...not to mention I had 318,000 miles on it.
I'm thinkin since power wise they're very close with the 4.7 and it's got good power so I should be happy with it...and any mods I do later on.

Normal tires on the street, the tranny will be okay. What I mean by "slammin'" is slicks on the dragstrip. That's much tougher on the hardware.

Well It's my 4x4 rig and I have no intentions on taking it to the drag strip. Other than goofing around every now and then, it isn't gonna be screamin everywhere. What about tranny...as long as I'm not running everywhere around 4500 rpm I should be fine right?

It's not the rpm, rather, it's the stress of engine power vs traction. That's why I refer to dragstrip, slicks, etc. The same situation can happen in your setup. Rev up, dump the clutch from a standstill with big tires.....something's gonna give, but moderate launches are okay, and winding out the gears isn't an issue since you'll be moving.
