Subject: What else can you do with SuperChips?

I haven't tried this yet and I would like hear some comments and predictions while I'm doing it and before I report the results.

I think we all know what will happen if you don't have the right size tire entered into it. Your speedo simply won't read correctly, right?

Well, I don't think it's simple at all. Don't your shift points rely on speed input? The sensor at that axle only gives rotation speed and not actual ground speed.

If I enter in a much smaller diameter, won't the speedo indicate a much lower speed? Wouldn't this move the shift points up? How about the reverse? I'm thinking not much benefit there.

Now that I wrote that, it reminds me of a problem that I've been hearing about. If ths shift points are too high at WOT, is it possible that it may not upshift before reaching maximum rpm? I'm not sure if speed is a governing factor at WOT or rpm and vacuum pressure.

Anyone care to guess if this will affect timing? I'm thinking not if it is based solely on rpm and other things not related to actual or indicated speed.

I'll go out on a limb with a predicition - won't affect ignition timing. I can see where a truck with smaller tires could benefit from more ignition advance in that scenario though. You make an interesting point regarding changing shift points here - if it does, I'm guessing it will still upshift by maximum rpm.

All this talk about raising the shift points.
I drive a manual, doesn't apply to me, but then again it does.

Have you seen a dyno graph, of a 4.7, with Ho cams and intake, AND a Superchips tuner?

At 4500rpm, the torque is falling at a 45degree angle, and at 5,000rpm, the HP is falling that steep also.

At 5700, it's identical to the 2200rpm levels.

It will go to 6 grand, yes, but it's not putting out squat there.

Well informed people have told me perhaps it's the mapping, then why couldn't SC's have gotten it to put out more at those rpm's?

Todd - because superchips (or an aftermarket flash) mostly works by controling ignition advance and fuel mapping; while the torque characteristics you are looking at are mostly determined by the cam profile and engine design. I believe they are getting it to put out more at those rpms than the stock programming, but the kind of increase you are thinking about would need a different cam and associated mods to achieve; likely at the cost of low rpm torque. Basically your motor has two brains - the elctrical one (PCM), and a mechanical one (cam).

Well, the whole thing turned out to be a bust. I changed the tire size from 30" to 24". All of the shift points changed according to the speedo but of course the speedo was not reading the actual speed. I used a GPS to measure my true speed and it turned out that none of the shift points changed. Apparently the shift points are controlled by the speed sensor and not by adjusted speedometer readings.

Your shift points will change with a change in tire size moving down with smaller tires and up with larger diameter tires. So Superchips does change the shift points but changing the programmed tire size does nothing but give an erroneous reading.

I figured that much.

The transmission should have at least TWO speed sensors inside it, being the input and output of the clutch packs and maybe even one on the output if the tranny (haven't looked yet).

I'm sure the Super Chips ONLY changes the math for the speedo/odometer vs rear end speed sensor.

Well,i`m waiting for more than 2 years for an opportunity to stop my truck and send the pcm to get the Leash flash, but now, it is sure difficult.
I`m starting to accept the loss and will setle for a SC shortly.
