Subject: Problem with v6 - v8 swap

I'm swapping in a 5.9 supercharged as we speak, but I am having troubles getting the NV3500 transmission off of the 3.9. I've got most of the engine dissassembled, along with the headers off. Next step is transmission off.

Is it possible to swap the engines without dropping the transmission? I have 4x4 and in order to drop the transmission it will add a lot of work. The exhaust, crossmembers and front axle are all in the way.

Can I swap the engines without dropping the transmission, or do I have to drop the transmission along with the engine and pull it out as a single unit? I'm worried about the splines not matching up, I already have the new flywheel.

I don't need theoretical from people who say yay/nay without actually doing it. I'm doing it right now and need real answers from people who have done the swap.

It's a 5spd 4x4 v6.

pull the motor and transmission out together.

it's much easier to remove the tranny from the motor when it's not in the truck. Then you can easily bolt it to the 5.9 with it out of the truck, too.

I have not actually swapped a V6 for a V8 in a dakota. So you can ignore this if you want to.

I have R&R'ed many V8 engines from a variety of vehicles. Leaving the trans in place is pretty common, no reason to take the trans out if you don't have to. Personally, I prefer to leave the bellhousing in place in most cars and trucks, just unbolt from the back of the block. You can also leave the clutch linkage alone, too. That saves a lot of time and work. Also, loosen, but do not remove, the rear trans mount bolts. That way you can move things around without damaging the mount.

If I need to move the vehicle around without the engine. I rest a 2x4 across the frame rails and bolt to the bellhousing.

Re-assembly is pretty easy if you prep for it. Make sure the clutch disc is aligned correctly so the input shaft just slides in. Get two bolts of the correct diameter for the bellhousing attachement, but about 5" long. Cut the heads off, and cut a slot in the end. Put them in the block on both sides at the lowest attachement point. Use these studs to guide the bellhousing/input shaft back in to place.

Leave the motor mounts off during the mating process. That allows you more movement to get things aligned properly. Once it's all bolted together then you can add the mounts.

I am using the NV3500 tranny with the new motor. Now my new problem is my 1999 v8 wiring harness is different than my 2002 wiring harness. I have to find the wiring diagram to add the 2 injector wires I need to add to my v6 wiring harness. My new v8 plug doesn't fit into my 2002 v6 fuse box.

I also found out that my 4x4 front axle is held up by my motor mounts. That adds more work to taking off my motor mounts.

Also, thanks for the post about leaving the transmission in, I would've had to drop my exhaust and everything with it to take the tranny off. I'm going to figure out the motor mounts tomorrow and try pulling the engine by wigglying it out of the tranny, I think loosening the rear is a great idea and I'm going to do that.
