Yesterday I took my truck to the dyno for a little tuning. What I am looking for now is an accuate driev train loss % so I can get a decent idea of my engine HP. I have the 44RE tranny and the NV231 HD transfer case.

And I hate to be rude, but please don't answer if you are just guessing.

How did you guys come up with those specific #s ? I've heard most autos around 25%, most manuals around 15%, the more efficient 45RFE around 20%.

Software used by most dyno. shops calculate it out based on the results of your dyno. run.

That's interesting - how would they be able to calculate it out when the dyno only measures power after the drive train loss ? Or do you mean the info is in the software from someone who previously dynoed an engine with and without the specific transmissions attached ?

There is something called a negative dyno run, I'm not sure how it works, but thats supposed to give you your drivedrain loss. If I had heard about that before I went, I would have asked.

I would imagine its similar to when we balance movable bridges. We measure the resistance in both directions to determine the rolling resitance of it.

Drivetrain loss is calculated by the operator doing a normal dyno. run then getting off the gas, not touching the brake pedal and letting the motor bring everything to a stop. The info. gathered is used to calc. the loss.

does a transgo shift kit help out on the drivetrain loss or does it just help in the shift.

When a shift is made, 2 gears are engaged at the same time momentarily. The amount of duration is how it makes it smooth. A shift kit will shorten the duration, there for less power is lost in the shift and more is put to the ground. coincidently it also helps lowers the trans temps.

The result is small in HP gains but big on less friction.
