Subject: Did I botch my TB?

I recently bought a 99 Durango and ported the TB like I had done on my Dakota. However, this time I am not getting the mpg increase that I did with the Dakota. I have the 5.2 in my Durango and had the 5.2 in my Dak. I was getting 14.2 mpg with my Dak including the MP PCM, k&N, 3923s, 3.90s and Flowmaster. I know the Durango is heavier but I have 3.55s turning 31" tires, a cold air intake, Flo-Pro and 3923s.

Someone smarter than me look at my website picture and tell me if I took too much off the TB. If I took too much off, would this be a contributing factor to my constant 11 mpg?

Here is the site: rantsnc.homestead.com/durango.html

Thanks. I know the Durango is heavy for the 5.2 and the 3.55s are weak on 31" but I was hoping for at lest 13mpg in town.

My wife has a 99 4x4 Durango with the 5.2, 3.55 gears and 31's and she gets about 16 mpg around town. All she has is a drop in K&N for now. Fixing to start pepping up her engine (tired of her bugging me about it). Going to do the intake like I did on my dak, add some 3923's and a flowmaster to start. Hers hauls butt. the 3.55's are fine with the 31's. I would think you should be getting a lot better than 11 mpg. Sorry but I cant figure why. I dont know if it could be cause of the porting and polishing job on the tb or not.

16 is great, EPA rating is 13/17 for the 4x4. I'm more in the 5.9 range with my mpg. I got a front end alignment a few days ago (toe was off, camber and caster were off also causing a very bad drift right), rotated and balanced the BFGs since the alignment issue has caused front tire wear. Hopefully these were contributing to some drag which I have fixed.

(1) Did you use a stationary drill press with hone or some sort of machine to get the 50mm size?
(2) Did you replace the throttle blades with larger ones?
(3) Did you try to keep the slope by hand?

If those three items were just done on a workbench or in you lap, the TB bores may very well be out of round. If the blades weren't replaced with slightly larger ones (due to the larger bore size), you're leaking air and the IAC is compensating by closing up at idle...bringing in more fuel to, again, compensate.

The job you did does look good though. :)

Bernd, I didn't remove any material around the butterflys (so it probably isn't a true 50mm, didn't think about that!) but I did remove the "hour glass" shape. I did try to keep the slope by hand and I measured across each bore quite a few times to try and keep them round and symetrical. Probably not doing me as much good as a fastman or Hughes StageII would be?

BTW, that photo was before I polished it. I had to pull it off again b/c the S-bolt I made broke off in the threaded hole while trying to align it with the air hat.

I took a look at the picture you sent me and responded with my thoughts on it.

Little trick: Grab a brake hone (rough and then a smooth stone) to clean up the bores. As long as you stay away from the lower portion of the bores, you shouldn't need any larger throttle plates.
