Subject: First time at the track for my 4X4

Message:
Finally got the Dak on the track down at SpeedWorld in the North West valley.

I left everything on my truck so I could see what I do as it sits. Got the truck box in the bed with ATV gear, tools, and even a large Deep Cycle battery. Got my stereo with the sub woofer, two amps, etc. I even left the spare on. nothing came off.

The first run I did was against my bro in laws 2WD RC Ram 1500 5.2
He's running 32-ish tires but has 4.10's and a locker.
I spun some but beat him buy a full second. But what sucks is I expected a good 16 flat. I got 16.5 16.6 at best spinning my one wheel wonder (open diff). It is pretty HOT out here in AZ.

I was bummed with the 16's and when I ran some sh*t box Honda's I had to run in the other lane. Worse yet. I THOUGHT I went around the water but must not have. Did a burnout like I was on ice. next time I barely touched the water (so I thought) and lightly burned the tires after the pit thinking I dried them off. Nope. I spun so bad it didn't even squeel. Let off. Hit it and spun again. Went like a 1/8 spinning and almost caught some stupid honda Accord at the end right at his door. I should have smoked that POS if i didn't spin. Got a 17 one of those times. YUKK.

My next run was against a SVT Ford Contour. I was pi$$ed with my burn outs so I clicked mine into 4HI that time! Well I hooked up real good that time but I'm sure running 4HI hurt me in the end. Still got mid to higher 16 but was at that guys bumper. He had a 24valve V6 in that little Contour. But he also had all his gear too. A few subs and 3 amps in his trunk.

Then some dude had a Hemi Ram and was letting his air down. I was like DUH! Let mine down from 40 PSI to 30 PSI. Hemi Ram guy wanted to race. this guy working the lines at the track had asked what I had. Hemi guy says can he race me. guy says "NOPE! I'm racing the Dakota first!"
I look. He's got his Chevy parked to the side of the lines. I aske "what you got. 5.3, 4.8?" He says 4.8. I see it's a Chevy 1500 RC 2WD with a 4.8 I think "uh oh. I've got a lot more truck to move!"

We get up there and I beat that guy by 1/10th of a second LOL! He said he'll get me next time :p

then I get to run the Hemi RAM. It's a QC 2WD 1500 RAM. And he had LSD. He only beat my 4.7 4X4 by 4/10th's!

So. My times sucked for what i wanted. BUT. Them other trucks didn't get any better. The Hemi got 4/10 and I sqeeked by a 2WD Chevy :)
And I spun every time with my one wheel wonder. But not so bad once I let the air down.

Maybe I'll take my truck box and extra battery out next time and see if it helps.
4.10's and LSD and I'll probably take that Hemi 2WD LOL!

Got some lousy videos. Lousy because I let the wife's little bro in law run my camera. He didn't focus on any times, or even verbally say what they were. But they still show the races.

Race against my bro in laws 5.2 RAM I beat his 2WD RAM 1500 5.2 by a good second or so. He's got taller tires, but also has 4.10's and a locker. He was my easiest victory and I didn't have many.

Me racing a 2WD Chevy 1500 RC with a 4.8 Vortec This guy WORKED there. He had his truck parked right next to the lanes and for some reason picked me out to race. I think he's close to ctock aside from exhaust. i beat him by 1/10th of a second! Still a victory and a good one my 4X4 QC against his 2WD RC Chevy!

Me racing a new 2WD RAM 1500 QC with a 5.7 hemi and LSD diff 2WD and more engine than me. He beat me by 4/10th of a second! Not bad.

My times SUCKED I thought. But two of them trucks there you would think should beat a 4X4 Dakota by quite a bit. I hung in there very well. I'll go next week if i can this time removing some weight. Maybe I can take a Hemi? Both of those trucks were bare a$$ empty but not me.

What were your trap speeds and 60's and what were they for the other trucks?

I forgot, do you have an auto or the 5sp?

It sounds like fun. I've been meaning to go get some time slips with my truck to see how fast (or not so fast) it really is.

Hey GD,
If you correct for the heat we have been haveing and the elevation, Your times would be arround mid 15's. NOT bad for a loaded 4x4 QC auto. I ran my bike at Firebird and ran an 11.45 when I KNEW I should be in the 10 sec. world. Anther buddy kept running 11.90's on a 10 sec. bike. I think those times are GREAT! NOW GET YOUR GEARS!!! LOL
P.S. I beat the tires off a QC hemi last week at work. He beat me before the gears, now I have him scratching his head....hehehe

Nice to see you got to the track,,, I used to run out at Phoenix Raceway (now SpeedWorld I've heard) years ago and liked racing there. Even though it wasn't as nice as Firebird, you could make a run and only wait a minute or two in the staging lanes before another run.

I've been thinking of running my 03 QC 2wd, but don't want to see the numbers. For some reason my 03 QC doesn't seem as strong as my old 00 CC, both 4.7, auto, 3.55's. Seems wierd that the QC doesn't pull as hard as the CC and certainly too much of a difference to be the QC's extra 400#. Guess the 00 CC was just tuned better, heck the gas mileage of the 03 QC is 1-2 MPG worse than the 00 CC, best I have eeeked out of the QC 18MPG at 75MPH,,, best out of the CC 20MPG at 80MPH+. Maybe it's the 545RFE compared to the 45RFE that's killing me, maybe it's the death flash, dunno...

Anywho, You said you dropped the tire pressure down to 30PSI. I had a V8 S-10 with 295/50r 15's and would run the tires at 10 PSI or less at the track. For street driving I would run the tires at 25PSI, but if I forgot to lower the tire pressure at the track I wouldn't get any traction. I don't think you can get away with 10 PSI on LT tires, but you might get better traction by lowering the tire pressure past 30PSI. Something to play with...

DSW, you didn't reconize that place in the videos???

That WAS SpeedWorld!
And yes. On normal time only nights you can race several times. I ran about 5 times easy!

I am at work now using my PC in my work van so don't have access to time slips. Worst reaction Time was .700 area. Best .200 area. Average was .3 to .4 for several of them.

I was upset about the mid 16's until I beat a 2WD RC Chevy and had a chance against a 2WD QC Hemi. 4/10ths was pretty close. And a Hemi is supposedly 100HP more???

I think these 4.7's don't get the honest rating they deserve. I bet his 2WD RAM didn't weigh much more than my 4X4 Dakota either.

I'll try to figure the other times off of the slips later when I get home.

Recognize the place? Yup, looks kind of like Phoenix Raceway Park, but that was 15 years ago LOL.

Wow, I guess things have changed if you could only get in 5 runs. 5 runs would have been a slow night way back when, I remember getting in 15-20 runs in a night, sometimes barely enough time to pull though the staging lanes,,,, ah the good'ol days. I guess the tracks are all clogged up with ricers now. Was getting that way when I sold my hot rod.

I just helped my neighbor drop a 383 stroker into his 87 GMC 4x4. I might have to head over to Las Vegas Motor Speedway and see what our trucks will turn once he gets it broken in...

I have a 97 CC 4x4 and run 15.8's. Keep this in mind though:
My computer is screwy so when I had the shift kit put in we boosted the line pressure but we never programmed it into the computer. It won't shift 3rd at WOT, I have to let completely off the gas and nail it back to the floor at which point I usually get a good errrrrrrr, and away we go.
I also have no grille or front bumper do to a little guardrail incident.
I also have 5" worth of lift and the prerunner fenders and bedsides. They're like big parachutes and it slows down tremendously at about 80+.
I have an NX kit with just a 75 shot and I hit the top end limiter and still ran a 15.8

I pulled up in the staging lanes against a turbo mazda and my buddy started talking to him out the passenger window. The guy said he's been running 14.6's all night. My buddy says, "You better watch out the trucks gonna get ya." At which point I said shut the F up you F'n moron. Well to my suprise pulled a truck length in first another in second let off nailed 3rd and hit the spray. I look in the mirror and we're still pulling away. I screamed holy $h!t we're 3 car lengths and pulling. Get near the end of the track and hit the top end limiter and he roared by to post a 14.6 to my losing 16.0 I was pissed and all my buddies talk trash about how slow my truck is. Except of course the one who was riding with me.

WOT is "Wide Open Throttle".

16.5 really isn't that bad for a truck of that magnitude, you have a quad cab 4x4, from what I understand, the 2005 Dak quad cab 4x4 with the 4.7 HO gets a 16.7 in the 1/4.

I would think that on a cooler day, you could get 16 flat. once you get 4.10s, that would probably get you to 15.5 - 15.6.

I am hoping to get a 15.4 - 15.6 when I run my Dak.

2001 CC 4x4 5-Speed 3.55 4.7

HO cams, KN Intake, Gibson Headers, F/B 70mm TB, Flowmaster 40, SuperChips 3715 Tuner ( Speed Limiter off, Rev Limiter Gone, tire size adjusted, set on High Performance ).

DSW, I didn't go back to the lines right away each time and I also raced select people a few times so that is why I only ran about 5 times. I could have ran 10 times I bet.
And yes. Lots of Ricers. I lost to two barely before I let the air out. I had some traction on my first run against the bro in law. Then I got the other lane and did very long burnouts watching these cars take off while I was spinning! These sh*t boxes had the seats all gutted and them gay racing seats installed. Like I said, I didn't even remove my spare or my tools or second battery.

BigTymer. You must have the wussy ~100 MPH limiter? Even without my SuperChips programmer I could do 120. Now it should be 140 easy. I don't think I'll worry about that anytime soon. I could run the entire race without 3rd gear if I ran 2nd to 6200+ RPM's. With 4.10's I should be hitting 3rd before the end.

Next time out, this saturday if possible, I'll remove the battery and tools from my truck box. Not sure if I should bother pulling the truck box or not due to leaving scratches and breaking the seal.

I'll also drop my tires down to 25 PSI I think.
They are 255/65/16's so they should have some meat if I air them down.

Traction was so bad last time I thought I was on ice when they sent me to the outside line :(

I usually run 20lbs in the rears and heat em up a little. I also have an extra set of wheels with 2wd tires on them so with those I come out to like a 4.10 ratio and the top end limiter is the 120 but with said tires it's about 100. If I lose the top end limiter I'll be down in the low 14's.

I couldn't even throw 15 inch rims on my Dak either. I guess the disc brakes will not have clearance.

GraphiteDak good to hear you got to the track. For comparison (I know, different day, different track) I ran a best of 16.0 at 82mph in my 2001 Ford Ranger Supercab 4x4, with 4.0L SOHC and 5 speed manual, totally stock. Most runs were in the 16.2s, and a 5.3L 4x4 extended cab Chevy with exaust also ran low 16s that day.
The HO cams I ordered are in, I hope to do the install in the next few weeks. When I'm done I'll take my 04 Dak CC 4.7 4x4 manual to the track this fall and post my times.
Oh yeah, don't be shy to drop your rear tire pressure to 18-20lbs.

Didn't notice anything with the flowmaster. Usually with ANY muffler gas mileage goes DOWN due to the foot ebing in the GAS more often!!!

So far I haven't HURT my gas mileage. I can say that much :)

1hotkadota, do you live out here in the AZ valley??? Where do you live??? I'd LOVE another Dak guy to come along. I could also try calling Todd (ProwlRT) one of these days as well. He lives down here somewhere and we went and watched Duner and some supercharged Dak's run there one night.

Went to the races last night and met 1hotkakota. Nice to meet more local Dakota guys.
I guess he doesn't have his computer at home so we wont hear from him until he goes back to work.

Anyway I ran my air pressure down to 20 PSI. It makes a big difference in the launch. I STILL burn them each time. But I don't sit there and spin like it did last week. It squeels but gets going and hooks up while I stay on the throttle. The low pressure MAY have hurt me up high. But I was very consisitant on all but one run. Didn't deviate more than 1/10th each time.
I raced 1hotkakota, and two Nissan Titan's. 1hotkakota has a 2WD RC with similar mods to me. Somehow i took each truck about half way from the grunt but got passed up. 1hotkakota was the quickest of the trucks except for maybe a lightning which I didn't run thank gawd!
I almost stayed with the 2WD and 4WD Titan's. I had each of them till the end. Dunno why I've got so much down low on them.

Some more videos. I let someone else run the camera, a little better job than the last person :p

1st run against 1hotkakota He beats me buy about 7/10's

Last run against him This time I removed the intake tube just to see if maybe it wasn't breathing air at higher speeds. Bad thing was it then took air from under the hood right at the open TB. I did worst on this run.

I race a 2WD Nissan Titan He sqeeks by me near the end. WTF???

What gearing do these have? The owner didn't know.
