Hi!

I have a 96 Dodge Dak 3.9 V6 87000 miles

My problem is I have been fighting a lean condition. My latest trouble has been Check Engine light; code 21 & P0132 O2 sensor shorted Hi. I have changed O2 sensor and it still has code. I put original back, reset computer, same problem. I just took it to a mechanic that has a snap on tool scanner and it had the same codes. He reset computer and adaptive memory and code came back. He checked voltage on plug wires and said it was hi, 35000 volts. The O2 sensor was hi at 4 volts. He said he thought maybe a wiring problem. I have changed the plugs, and IAC, also. I left the mechanic and was on the way home and sat at a RR track for 5 minutes. Truck was running slightly rough and missing. Had to pay attentiion alittle to notice. Anyway, as I accelerated, it popped, banged and missed. I smashed down on gas and it took off. I don't know if I should take to a dodge dealer thinking they see dodges more often. I am frustrated and don't have alot of $$$ to keep guessing. PLEASE HELP!!!

Because i cant be there to fiddle with it i can only give suggestions and assumptions. The mechanic does sound right in a wiring problem. sounds like theres a sensor issue could be maf, map, ect, crank, cam, VSS, or any number. Since it runs great on WOT or so im assuming thats what you mean, your running on open loop with out any feed back from your sensors. There are issues with sensors going bad and not tripping the corresponding code. if you have a guide on what the proper readings for the sensors, take a Multi meter and probe each sensor until you find a reading off (besides your O2). Just my personal suggestion, have that mechanic plug his scanner back in and get a reading on the VSS. Ive seen things like this in a lot of chryslers recently....
BTW if the O2 sensor was reading 4 volts and not .4 it would be either burned out or soaked with gasoline.

Scott, i'm not sure about what that mechanic told you , but usually when a o2 sensor reads high voltage is cause is reads lack of o2, so that would make it a rich condtion, anyhow, have you checked your air-intake for any restrictions including the filter? have you checked your fuel pressure (too high?)you said it was "popping"? Not sure from where, but on a rich misfire you will get a backfire/popping from you exhaust, on a lean misfire you will get a backfire/popping form you intake. HOPE THIS HELPS , LET ME KNOW.

Hi!

Thanks for all the responses.

i broke down and took it to my local Dodge dealer and had him scan it. It cost $27.50 and he told me it was a bad part in my PCM that was causing my O2 sensor reading. A new PCM from them was $756 installed. i checked with Advance Auto and they have one for $220.00, but I have to take it to Dodge to have the memory flashed. It was a reman by Cardone. Has anyone had any experience with this brand? I have driven it around and it has NO codes in it, but it still pops and bangs on acceleration. Does anyone think that this bad PCM could be causing this intermittent problem? I hate to spend this kind of $$ and still have the problem. Any advice would be helpful.

When mine did that it was a broken wire to the 02 sensor.

Holy crap $756 for a pcm what a rip. The PCM for my 93 5.2 was only like $300 for the Dealer.Try e-bay for one.But to be honest it doesn't sound like a pcm problem.If the pcm was to go bad you would know it.If you do buy a aftermarket pcm the dealer does not have to flash it, in the same case I don't think I would be buying one from advanced or autozone.You can find them here on the net also...I got my performance pcm off of e-bay for like 125 bucks..The popping and banging sounds like cap and rotor maybe a bad pickup coil bad wires..But the code and the O2 I have no clue on that...

I had similar probs with my 93 318. It was intermittant and caused me lots of headaches - I spent alot of money on new parts, just to find out it was my PCM - $250.00 From the dealer (wish I'd bought the performance PCM for a few bucks more.
