Has anyone had any experience with the JBA y-pipe http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=eadvsearch.asp&SearchType=Make . I just put gibson headers on my 96 318 auto and wanted to get a new Y-pipe to accomodate the headers and the rest of the exhaust.

I got one at truckperformance.com for $150 shipped. Without a new y-pipe, shorty header install is almost worthless.

Even for those that don't install headers I would recommend the JBA y-pipe. I think the stock y-pipe is more restrictive than the cat.

I just went to that website and could not find any y-pipe listed for a 5.9L, or any y-pipe at all. Do you remember the exact location?

N56629, I figured that those headers would be worthless without a new Y-pipe when I saw the factory one. The diamater of the Y-pipe is smaller than the output of the headers and there are all sorts of crazy bends. One bend makes the pipe completely flat like it hit something in the road. I think I will get the Y-pipe and a magnaflow cat then have the muffler shop make a new pipe from the Y-pipe too the cat. Is that aluminized pipe pretty durable or does it rust out pretty quick?

Sorry, I forgot that truckperformance.com had a closeout when I bought one for $150. Summit had the next best price.

5.2Dak, the y-pipe is much heavier than the rest of the system and usually lasts for the life of the vehicle. I assume that it aluminize mild steel. I think someone makes a stainless one but I'm not sure who, however, I'm sure it would be quite spendy.

Here's a Couple Pictures I took today of the Stock 2005 Dakota Y-Pipe while I was getting my JBA Headers Installed. JBA says they dont have the Y-Pipe yet for the `05 Dakota's but they have the headers.

I was told that the 2005 no longer has the smashed Y-Pipe but It still looks small to me and if I can ever find one that looks more open I'm buying it.

If your interested in checking out the pictures you'll need to go to: http://www.onlineautorama.com/forum/showthread.php?t=525 because I'm not totally sure how to post them here.

Let me know if you think they could be alittle bigger to.

Thank you.

Yup,.. That'd be the picture of my Y-Pipe.
So what was the trick to posting images?

I'm guessing this board accepts HTML code,...
I havent tried yet.

The Y-Pipe doesnt look nearly as bad as some of the crushed Y-Pipes that I've seen on some Dakota's but there still room for improvment for sure.

This was more than enough reason for me to install a JBA y-pipe. I installed before I even had headers. In fact I think I "felt" more of an increase in performance from the y-pipe than the JBA shorty headers.

HOLY Cow... Man thats a Huge Difference.
Great Pics although I can't tell on the 1st pic how the two pipes are connected.

Also did your new and old Y-Pipe have an O2 sensor connected to them?

Man I can't get over that. This has pretty much made my mind up. as soon as a Higher Flow Y-Pipe comes out I'll be all over it.

Thank you for posting such great Pics.

The long tube, the one I'm measuring, crosses over from the driver's side. You are also looking at the front of the y-pipe. I don't think I have better pictures of the JBA pipe, but the measurement you see is very uniform because it is mandrel bent.

It does have the O2 sensor bung.

The only problem installing the y-pipe without the headers is that the flange is much longer than stock. I has to be ground back about an 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch. Here's a comment from performancecenter.com-

Installation: Optional Y-Pipe replaces stock Y-Pipe for added performance modification required when used with stock exhaust manifolds.

It's not to difficult to do, but it helps to have a handheld grinder or you would be there all day with a file. You could cut it with a hacksaw but you are cutting at angle. If you make the modification it still fits if or when you install headers. Damned if I know why the could make it fit both. I installed the headers later.

I wondering if I could have the exhaust place cut off the Y part right where it starts to narrow and then just dual exhaust it out the back with another muffler added of course but do you think they could do that and you'd think there'd be 2 sensors one on each pipe tho...

But I like to know if they could because I'll go monday and have them cut it and add another Flowmaster muffler...

Any foreseen issues?

Trying to use the stock y-pipe like that wouldn't be a good idea even if it was workable. If you want true duals get the whole setup. You only need an O2 sensor in one pipe. If you eliminate the cat you will need an O2 simulator.

Why is there no Y-pipe available from this website for the 2000 models? In fact, they don't even offer a selection for the 5.9L.
This link shows the stainless steel option for 1998 models, which is the first year they offer for the ss. Once you get to 2000, there are no more Y-pipes offered. I wonder why?

Many manufactures and their vendors are notorious for not maintaining an up to date list. Simply find out for yourself if anything has changed for your year of truck. I you can't see a change, like two pre-cats instead of a single, it's pretty safe to assume that you can use the same as the year you are comparing your truck with.

For example, I do know that I use the same y-pipe as a '98, so if that is all they listed, that is what I would buy.

You can also go direct to the manufacturers site and sometimes find up to date applications.

I was told by one exhaust shop that they couldn't make one for the 4.7 because of the precats installed by the factory on most 02 & later models (although one of their employees said he would fabricate one after hours for the regular cost plus a case of Bush). It seems that they could get in some sort of trouble for tampering with emissions. Seems kinda foolish to me. The fastest way to get rid of any kind of emissions stuff is to tell people not to mess with it.

If the 02 has pre-cats you may be able to use an 01 y-pipe and a high flow cat.

I'm one of the lucky ones that doesn't have the precats. I've often wondered what kinda' difference one of the high flow cats would make. I know that, compared to a friends 02 w/precats, my 02 has a bit more throttle response. I know some of you guys out there have no precats with a high flow cat. What kind of gains did you experience?

02 QC no precats, TB hogged out, cai w/K&N, HO intake, fms injectors, no fan, TPS@.75

I've got an '01 4.7 with the stock pre-cats with 4 O2 sensors. Everything thereafter is changed. The 2" pipes after the pre-cats are now 2 1/2". The factory Y-pipe, with its 1 1/2" entry into the "Y", was replaced with Magnaflow 2 1/2" dual into 3" exit Y-pipe. The 2 1/2" catalytic converter was trashed for a Magnaflow/Carsound hi-flow 3". A Flowmaster 70 II exits into 2 1/4" duals with 3" stainless tips. The exhaust system backs up the HO cams, 68 mm modded TB, and alloy hombrew air intake. I hope to dyno the truck soon, but in the meantime, the Y-pipe and hi-flow cat. gave 1 MPG improvement.
