i have a 99 dakota r/t and am wanting to supercharge it. does anyone know anything about the prochargers? some kind of air to air cooling supercharger. without the intercooler they run about $2400 and with about $3200.

would i get my moneys worth out of a supercharger or should i just look into a superchip or programmer?

I just put a procharger on my '97 5.2. Good luck finding it for 3200. I paid 3800 and by the time you buy all of the stuff you need you are looking at over 4k. Was it worth it? I say hell yeah. I haven't had time to tune it yet, but the stock settings they give you get it close enough to run open throttle safely. They make alot of power. I had my 550 lb street bike in the back and merged on the highway as if I was unloaded. And at the time I was only getting about 6psi. The kit is rated at 8-9, and I am working on getting it up to that.

Are you comparing the add hp/tq of the Super Chip's, to that of a Super Charger?

I can't even think of a good analogy to describe this total mismatch of increased power.
Maybe Vipor to a 4hp Tecumsah go cart?

IMO, if your looking to increase performance there is NO replacement for forced induction.
I've gone through all the bolt-on there are for my vehicle, I sold them all and went with a turbo, the best money i've ever spent.
I will never again buy a N/A performance part for any of my vehicles. If i'm going to do anything to increase performance it's going to be some sort of forced induction or nothing at all. Well aside from a nice exhaust system to compliment the turbo/supercharger. IMO you will be happy with the purchase if your looking to increase performance.

crow 318,

when you bought the procharger for your truck, did you buy it with or without the intercooler? i think that was the price they gave me without the intercooler. cant you run them without the intercooler?

Vortech/Paxton are also good choices. You can look at Powerdyne as they are dirt cheap on ebay right now, just keep in mind you will need to do additional work to get the most out of it - MSD BTM to help control detonation, belt tensioner to help prevent belt slippage, 7-rib belt to help with that as well.

I personally like the Vortech/Paxton blowers, but you are looking at a substantial investment no matter what route you decide to take. You also need to make sure you get it tuned correctly. Too many people put a blower on their truck without proper tuning, and end up blowing headgaskets.

The Procharger is the only supercharger available with an intercooler. That is not saying you can't get one for another brand, but you would also need to get the tubing.

As far as I know, the only kit that procharger makes for the dakota is intercooled. My kit is a 9psi. If they do have a non-intercooled kit it would most likely only be 6psi.

And like sneezer said, make sure you budget some time and money for tining. I plan on 2 hours on a dyno just to tune the FMU that came with my kit. If you have to get some type of aftermarket ignition, you can plan on at least another hour.

crow318, Just out of curiosity how do you plan to tune a fmu? It's just a boost dependent fuel pressure regulator that raises the fuel presure in relation to boost pressure. Even if you had an adjustable one (able to change from 12:1 to 10:1, ect) your not going to be making very many changes because lower it to much your fine in the lowband but lean up top, and vise versa. And unless your on a dyno that uses a wideband o2 that mounts to your exhaust (vs the tailpipe sniffer) your afr readings will be "close" at best.

I am not sure how the dyno will get thier readings, but the FMU that I have has a range adjustment and 5 sliders to adjust each boost range.

To set the range, you need a regulated pressure supply. I know that the truck runs to just under 8psi, so I will set the last slider to 7psi or so.
Then each slider will corespond to each 1.5psi

I think that will be close enough for the occasional stop light race or freeway merging.
