I've been thinking about a programmer for my Dak ('99, 5.2, 4x4, AT, reg. cab). It seems that a lot of folks here have SuperChips. I see that HyperTech also makes a tuner. A quick check seems to show that HyperTech claims performance gains with regular fuel, while rumor is that SuperChips requires premium for perf gains.

Any observations, experiances comparing the two tuners "head-to-head" would be appreciated.

thanks in advance,

Larry

Well, Larry, if you buy the HyperTech we can do it on both the v6 and the v8. I suppose I could send out another MinnDak letter and see if anyone has the HyperTech.

I used a Hypertech on my '01 5.9. You have two choices, Premium and Mid grade. I use Mid grade fuel for the Mid Grade setting. But it pings like made if you use the Premium setting and premium fuel. Might be just my high altitude or local fuel blend, I don't know.

Anyway, very happy with it. Better performance and better fuel mileage. Something I should have done right away.

N56629,

I checked the Hyper tech web site. You're correct, there seems to be one other difference between the two units: I can use the same Superchips unit on both my '99 V8 and '02 V6, while HyperTech seems to be V8 only. In addition, the HyperTech units seem to be limited to one or two model years.

I'm starting to like the features of the SuperChips unit a lot better . . . However, I still don't care much for the idea of having to use premium to realize any perfomance gains. It's not only that I'm a cheapskate, but the need for premium changes the economics and potentially makes other mods have more bang-for-the-buck.

Well i have a Hypertech Programmer and was very satisfied with it. Can really fell a diffrence with the 87 program ,but run the 93 octane program and it really wakes up. I averaged a .3 second loss and 4mph gain.

Larry, with the 87 octane program I'm getting better gas mileage, my 0-60 is better by at least a second, I can switch from the 87 octane program to the performance program in just a few minutes and the back again, and I also like the shift pattern better. I know, it won't do a thing for your v6 as far as shifting, except to maybe rev higher but I still think you should try it out. Should work real well with that fine modified throttle body.

N56629,

So you're saying that your SuperChips IS giving you improvements with the 87 octane program . . .

Well, I took the plunge and picked up a used SuperChips off eBay. It was cheap enough, and I guess I can always resell it if I decide that the 87 octane results aren't what I would like.

Larry

PS: With gas prices going through the roof, it would be nice if HT & SC added E85 tuning to their programmers!
