Subject: Gear Ratio?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 2003 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab with a V6? I was wondering what gear ratio I had and where I could go and find a 4.10 gear ratio. O yeah I have heard that uping the gear ratio will give me more noticable torque and might decrease my gas mileage. Is this true? Thanks in advance.

You should find the ratio on a sticker in the glove box, or a sticker or tag on the rear. Changing to 4.10 has given some of us with the 4.7 slightly better milage, not sure about the 6. The rear gear is a torque multiplier, anything going to a lower gear will feel more torque. Google something like "mopar ring gear" for many options.

Unless you have the special tools needed, you should let a pro do this job. If it's not exactly right the gears will howl and wear out quickly. They should have a supplier for the ratios you're looking for.

As for fuel mileage, that depends on how you drive. Right now you probably have a 3.55 gear. With a 31" tire and auto trans, you're turning about 1900 rpm's at 60 mph. With a 4.10 gear, you'll be turning about 2200rpm's. That's probably not enough of a differanc to seriosly affect fuel mileage.

OTOH, if you live in Wyoming and routenly drive at 85mph, then you're rpm's go from 2700 to 3100. That's probably enough to make a significant differance in mileage, because now you're over the back side of the power curve.

Sounds good in theory, doesn't it? The only way to really know is to make the change and see what happens. But if I was driving a V6, I would do it.
