Subject: Torque Converter Lock-Up?
IP: Logged

Message:

My '04 Dakota has developed a pretty significant hesitation at 42-49 MPH. Dealer told me that there's "nothing they can do" until there's a software patch released. Said it's something about "torque converter lock-up." I know I'm not driving this truck with this problem forever! Anyone have any ideas?

It might just be the converter locking up. try to drive it with overdrive disabled.. it should lock at about 35MPH with overdrive disabled, and around 45 with overdrive enabled. it might not be so bad with 3.92 gears, but the last 2 dakotas I had have had 3.55 gears.. the 3.9L I had was WAY worse lugging around at low speeds in lockup..

Also if you barely put your foot on the brake pedal, it will take the transmission out of lockup.. just make sure you do that when no one is behind you, and apply just enough force that the RPMs come up slightly.. it will lock up later with overdrive enabled, if you get on the gas a little later. I find that it sometimes lugs around if I let it go into lockup around 45.. So I get into the gas slightly more, and it locks up around 55 (and it's more fun to drive :-)

Sorry I didn't really have any ideas.. Although you might try the TPS sensor mod. Do a search for it, it's prety easy to modify the sensor..

Torque converter normally locks up at 35 and the OD at 45. It's easy to distingish the two. When you are under 35mph you will notice that the rpms quickly increase when you apply even light throttle pressure. When the torque converter locks up at 35mph you will notice that the rpms are proportional to the increase in speed.

This is why I like the SuperChips program. The torque converter doesn't lockup until about 50mph. The OD still comes in at about 45mph.
