Subject: What's a LSD for the 9.25" rear end?
IP: Logged

Message:
I've got a 1999 5.2 Liter, 5 speed 4x4 Dakota. It only sees light off road duty. Mostly I just want the LSD for stree use. Such as when I'm turning right at stop signs, the right rear tire loses traction and it really limits the power I can apply pulling out onto state highways.

I'd prefer a gear driven LSD versus a clutch type but I've heard there isn't one available for the 9.25" rear end?

Any advice at all would be appreciated please.

Thanks

Auburn is reputed to be better than the stock LSD; and Eaton is supposed to be better than that. So far I'm happy with the Auburn, hooks up very well.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Just a question about LSD rearends. I have heard that if your rear end locks while turning that it can tear it up badly, because the wheels are supposed to turn at different rates. If they lock together whole turning, they turn at the same rate putting strees on it. Not sure if that maks sence, but I have heard that several different places. Just a little FYI, not sure if you had heard the same thing.

That is not true for limited slip differentials. That is why they are called Limited Slip Differentials. They are not locked all the time but rather lock only when traction is lost on one wheel so that power can be applied to the other wheel with traction.

I guess I'll go with the Auburn, others have recommended it as well.

Thanks for the help.

Not to start something but there you mentioned that you wanted it for when you are turning and the right wheel slips. If you do that too much, you might have problems, because LSD should only be used (to my knowledge) going straight, for while turning, one wheel should spin more than the other, but an LSD rearend will prevent this. Just trying to save you some hastle in the long run.
