Skipping 3rd??????

That makes NO sense. 3rd would be the straigh through 1:1 ratio.

Did the dealership tell you it skipped 3rd?

Mine goes through every gear. I know that.

Try turning the OD off. When you get to the highest gear, that will be 3rd gear.

3rd would be 1:1 if it was a 4sp, 4th is 1:1 5th is OD when driveing normal my trans shifts 1-2, 2-3,3-4,4-5 2nd and 3rd being my 2 passing gears above 30 mph. Anything 50mph down to 31mph and it hits 2nd at WOT and holds it to around 70mph. Anything above 50mph it hits 3rd and holds that to 85mph. But coming up through the gears at WOT from a stop it goes through 1-2,2-4 it never touches 3rd it shifts out of 2nd at around 70mph and goes striaght into 1:1 and hplds that till I hit the speed limiter at 116mph and the gap between 2nd and 4th is huge my truck falls flat on its face.

WHen you are going to pass someone and it downshifts into "3rd", that is actually one of the two second gear ratio's in the 545re transmission. 1st= 3:00 to 1, 2a= 1:76 to 1, 2b= 1:50 to 1, 3rd= 1:00 to 1, 4th= 0.77 to 1, 5th= 0.67 to 1. Thats the answer I got from the DiamlerChrysler info sheet for my truck. Gearing may be listed incorectly as Im going off of my slowly fading memory

Hmm. I wonder if you are clear that it IS skipping 3rd or not.

If I go from a dead stop mine runs 1st out to about 50 MPH.
The 2nd goes to about 75 to 85. Then 3rd would probably about peg 120MPH.

Now there IS that one spot where if I'm going a good 75 or so and floor it it will start at the grunt bottom of 3rd and takes a bit more to get going. If I slow down to 70 and floor it, it will grab 2nd and take off really good. That is all normal.

Now what I was thinking was for you to go through the gears from a dead stop. Once it shifts OUT of 2nd note what your RPM's are at say 70-80 MPH.

Then stop, push the OD button to turn OD off. Do it again. The only difference may be it locking up the converter earlier which i have noticed, but that highest gear you get should be 3rd.

If it seems the same as before, you ARE getting 3rd gear. Maybe you've noticed the alt 2nd gear we get on a downshift to pass and are thinking it is skipping that during upshifts from a stop.

If your truck IS in deed skipping 3rd, you better get it re programmed by the dealer.

You could also just write down your RPM's vs speed after it shifts out of 2nd and look it up.

I've got a manual, 5 real gears, I hear the new ones have a six speed.

Anyway, LIke I said years ago, the 4 speed is a 3speed from start to top end, and the 5 speed a 4 speed, and you have a different gear it will downshift to called a prime gear.

You said it correctly in the above posts.

the 3.7 and 4.7 are not the same motors....for example the 3.7 has a better flowing intake from stock, and forged pistons + you can not put the 70mm tb for a 4.7 on a 3.7 diferent bolt pattern....i had 3.55's and open dif from stock i ran it at the track and got a 17.4 as my best time, i instaled 3.90's and posi and my best time to date is 16.1 + plus i learned how to get off the line better, but the
gears would be the best bang for the buck....

jeremy, even though that is a V6, that is still some cool numbers/improvement to support the gear change. Great job.

As far as the gear ratios go, this is what I was always told they were for the newer 5-45RFE

Gear Ratios
1st 3.00
2nd 1.67 - upshift; 1.50 kick-down
3rd 1.00
4th 0.75
5th 0.67

I heard that DC added the 5th gear to the 45RFE to stop a vibration in the Jeeps or something. Then they just programmed it into all of the PCM's since that was all that was needed to get the extra ratio.

I've RARELY had mine use the 4th gear. Towing on mild grades it HAS used it. And the converter WAS locked up too.

Thanks for the info I was calling 2b 3rd gear, mybad ,but I don't understand why it dosen't shift 1,2a,2b,3rd at WOT. I never knew it had 2 overdrives I wonder if there is anyway to keep it in 4th ,5th is too high with 33's and 3.55's and 3rd is a little too low, if I could just keep it in 4th.

You got me there too. 4th would be sweet for towing. But it doesn't really like to use it much. I am amazed how often my truck does hold in 5th even when towing. Gas mileage took a plunge the one time I manually left OD off. Like 3 MPG! I since leave the OD on.

I think the 4.10 gears will be the final touch to what I have done so far. I don't have 33's, more like 29's or whatever 255/65/16's work out to. I think it was around 29 + inches. Still taller than I think the 2WD Dak's have.

If you have 33's, I'd deffinitely get the 4'10 gears first thing.

No problem. I just copied that data a long time ago and had it saved on my computer along with other Dakota information.

When I get the 4.10's, you all know I'll take some pics of the install and of course make some videos of the performance afterwords when I TEST them

Oh yeah. You said you lived in AZ also?

I live in the North West Valley. Area Code 85335

I've got power tools too :)

It will be a few months till I can buy the gears since I want LSD too and we have 4X4's so that means TWO sets of gears and install kits!

If I can make another bonus at work, I'd buy them gears. That's how I got the SuperChips spure of the moment.
