Subject: urgent problem

Dont know what to do and need some help! Somethings wrong with the fuel pump. Thought it was dead but dont think so anymore. Tried testing for power at the pump... 4 wires 1st one had power at start for a few seconds (when you here the pump kick on i presume) the pump worked that one time then didnt work. now no power at that wire.. fuses good relays good i guess (switched with good ones) Dont know what else to say ... any help would be greatly welcomed.

Usually on fuel pumps they get power when you first turn the key to ON then relay shuts fuel off. Then when you crank the engine the fuel pump gets power again.

Sounds about right... Check this out now, I go out this morning and the pump kick on! Im like what in the hell. So the pump goes on. The truck doesnt start first time or second. Third time no pump! I wait and try again, success, truck starts runs crapy but runs.. Im kinda afraid to drive it anywhere... well see what happens.. Thanks for help

That sounds like what mine did with the bad fuel pump. It would start randomly, and run like crap. As soon as I hit the gas, it would die.

Of course it happened right after I filled my tank.

If you are gonna replace it, I fould it very easy to remove the bed. My tank is plastic, but the straps are not. On a '97, they looked fragile.

A few bolts, and a few friends, thats all it took.

I had the same problem. I checked these boards and found the problem was similar to the stuck check valve at the fuel pump.

I printed the post and took them to my local dealer, who had previously told me the starting problem was normal in these trucks.

Presented the printouts and got a new fuel pump assembly installed under warrenty (SP). Sound like you have the same problem.
