Ya know...

I have searched the internet and cannot find an aftermarket y-pipe. I called one of the local muffler places and the guy was very wary of promising anything. As it turns out, they are prohibited by law from replacing a working catalytic system. I have heard that 80K miles is the "magic" number for exhaust modifications. This guy still did not want to touch it until I told him that I was going to do the mod.

The question I have is this: Does anyone have any hard numbers which prove that the stock Y-pipe is bad for performance?

Depends on the year and engine.
Can't tell either from the posts.

It all depends on what year Dakota is. If you have a single cat, the y-pipe goes in front of and does not replace the cat.

I'm really surprised that there are no dyno tests on some of the after market y-pipes. Good ones are mandrel bent and flow much better than stock. The factory pipe has at least two bends that effectively reduce the diameter by a 1/4 inch or more.

What good does it do to put a high quality 2.5 inch plus exhaust system behind a y-pipe that is crushed down to 2.2 inches or less? To me, the replacement of the stock pipe is as logical as replacing the stock muffler or cat with a high performance one.

Nope. But one good look will tell you it's good for some fine backpressure, though.
