hey i recently bought a 96 dakota 4cyl that im lookin to do some performance mods on. I know i would have liked to of found a v8 but i couldnt for the cash. Im lookin to upgrade the exhaust, intake, and maybe throw a nitrous system on. just a real basic nitrous system. Couple questions

1. What kind of exhaust would give me the most power/least restriction that will also sound ok. Not horribly loud just sound good despite that its a 4 cyl

2. where in teh hell can i find a cold air intake for this year of truck.

3. what nitrous kit should i run that doesnt cost too much. I just want a really basic kit.

why?

Why are u willing to spend that much money when u probably could've found v8. U add all that stuff up u could've saved that for the bigger engine.

Check out www.turbododge.com there is a guy on there with a turbo on his 2.5 jeep. Witch is the same engine that is in your dakota I belive. A turbo is the only way your going to kick some V8 ass. If you don't want to go turbo then headers made for the jeeps might fit but I am not sure. As for air intake I think your SOL you will have to make your own or put in a K&N and call it good enough. I would go with a 2.25 or 2.5 exhaust. And get your head and intake ported to take advantage of your new found exhaust flow. Then you could maybe consider a cam swap. Somebody should make cams for that engine. If you do all that you might make 170hp and run with the V6s. I don't now for sure how much that engine can take but it should take a 50hp shot of nitrous and then your in V8 territory. Not that I am agains't the V8s or anything but you guys suck you have to open up you mind a little and realise everybody does not need to drive around in a V8. What did the 4 banger ever do to you? And who says you have to drive it?

Why not strap a 400 HP nitrous kit to the engine and let it fly,,, the truck will blow up after 10 seconds,,, but those will be the fastest 10 seconds that truck will ever see LOL

"whats so special about it?"

The engine bay has a lot of extra room since those pesky extra 4 cylinders of a V8 are not hogging up all the room :-P

Yeah you should see the top down view of my engine bay there is room enough to stand in the engine bay with the engine! It is great for working on things. I would think sublimimij dakota would be much the same. But no Kaz there is nothing "special" about it. It is just my new signature. I do have plans for it though and by the end I should have a very streetable 300hp turbocharged fourbanger with the ability to go up to 400 on race gas.

I`d trade the extra room under the hood for 4 more cylinders any day.
Actually, i`d not want to spend any minute of my life w/ a 4 cyl., and what i want to see is the tire marks when i jump from 2nd to 3rd gear.

Talk about being embarrased. How would you like your RT ass handed to you by a 12 sec. 4 banger minivan? I don't think that I could own one of these things. I would die laughing my ass off everytime I handed someone theirs.

Is that Gus Mahon's Minivan? Heck I have N/A Neon DOHC that runs low 15's with stock internals as required by the SCCA. I know of many turbo Dodges runnimg 13's or less with stock internals and no nitrous. It would make an interesting Gen I 2.2 or 2.5 Dak project.

I loved that, but it most be a litle impractical.
How long that engine will last?
How much all the mods costed?
How reliable, streetable it is?
On the other hand most be awesome to stop at the light next to just any thing and than, dispose them at the green light.
This is one case where oranges and apples do mix.

A used Turbo II 2.2 can be had for under $1000. To increase the hp from the stock 174hp to let's say 250 requires running about 18lbs of boost. This is very streetable and the engine will last a long time. Add another $500 to the cost of the engine. This brings you to $1500 max.. If you want 300 hp figure on over 20lbs of boost, an o-ringed block and larger fule injectors. Still he engine the total cost of the engine should not top $2000.

Here's a guy recounting his experience with an R/T ass kicking mini-van. It's a good read for anyone doubting the capabilities of the four-banger.

After reading it I wonder why anyone would want an R/T that can't even haul a 4x8 sheet of plywood. It must be totally humiliating. Well, at least it's a dodge and not a Chevy van.

"In September of 1988 I purchased a new 1989 Dodge Caravan with the 2.5 turbo 1 motor. It's best quarter mile was 16.5 sec. on a cold night. I threw in Mobil 1 oil, @ stuck on a K@N air filter. My muffler man welded a 2.5" exhaust pipe onto the back of the cat, with the cat acting as the muffler. At New England Dragway the mini cut a 2.437 60' time, and 16.182 @ 84.11 mph.

I put in colder spark plugs, a colder thermostat, & bled the boost to 12.5#s. Back at NED the mini ran 16.01 @ 84.58. The van got a manual fan switch (to keep the fan on at the track). I put a solenoid air valve on the wastegae line bleed-off so that I could control boost from a toggle switch on the dash. That way I could leave the line on 5 lbs. without spinning the tires, then flip the switch up to 13 lbs. while under way. This produced a 2.38 launch, & a quarter of 15.766 @ 85.86 mph.. A little practice with the HI-LO switch= 2.28 60', and 15.558 qtr mi.

A 13# pop-off valve was made & installed on the map sensor line to keep the stock computer from shutting me off at high boost. I threw on a Spearco intercooler and ran 15.111 @ 89.45 mph.. My Cyberdyne rich-lean gauge told me that fuel was needed. I installed a pinch-valve on the fuel return line to close the return as the boost climbs in order to raise fuel pressure. 14.854 @ 91.40, at 14 lbs. boost.

The 3 speed auto tranny was beat up. After a beefed up rebuild, & a hike to 15.5 lbs boost, Mean Mini cut a 14.563 @ 92.75 mph. Keep in mind that this was a 3,250# vehicle with 30 sq. feet of frontal area. In 1991 I ran a single NOS fogger nozzle rated 70-80 hp., and pulled a 13.43.

In 1992 I got rid of the nitrous, after deciding to beat my record without it. I found myself back in the 14.6's. I added an extra fuel injector on the intercooler tube 6" before the throttle body, turned on by a pressure switch at 14#s. The coil was moved closer to the distributer, and a short solid-core coil wire put on. Sticky street legal tires were mounted on 15" aluminum Daytona wheels. Two coils of each spring were clamped together to stiffen the suspension, & lower the van. 100 lbs of weight was removed from the rear half. I took the balance shafts out of the engine. At NED the 60' time was 2.217 w/ quarter mile of 14.170 @ 96.03 mph.(18lbs boost) 13.949 turned out to be the best time possible on the tiny Mitsubishi turbo, which could not pruduce more than 18.5 lbs.

I knew a Garret would flow much better, and that a Super 60 would be better still. The super 60 turbo, with a 3" exhaust, ran 13.764 right out of the box at 97.67. After the addition of a sixth injector and positraction, Mean Mini cut a 2.08 60' time, and a qutr of 13.569 @ 99.80.

In September of 1994 I drove 330 miles to Cecil County Dragway in Maryland. The van out-accelerated 7 cars out of 7, was the quickest daily driver there, and cranked out a 13.484 @ 101.36 mph in 95 degree heat. Then she packed up and purred home after churning out 26 lbs+ boost with no trouble.

At NED, on a 75 degree Saturday afternoon, I made 2 passes with my new underdrive pulley on. Boost was 27 lbs. The tires spun (2.194 60') to a 13.475 @ 102.29 mph. On the second pass the tires spun less (2.025) and gave up a 13.184 @ 102.57 mph.

The minivan has been on the back burner, as my 12 second Acclaim has taken up my racing time, but the van WILL run 12's in 1998!"
