Im installing the mopar 360 in an 88. When i install the wiring harness do i have to replace all the interior controls i.e; speedometer, Fuel gauge, voltmeter etc. Or is there a wa to still wire the old controls into the new PCM? also i want to replace the old speedometer anyway for a larger speedometer. (got one the goes up to 240 mph ^_^) How would i wire that up with the new wiring config. Thanx in advance

Is this a new crate motor or a pull from a truck? An '88 is gonna have a cable-driven speedo unless you're using a newer tranny. Are you using a carb or shooting for MPI? You mentioned a new PCM. New replacement for an '88, or a Magnum unit, or something else?

It's a motor i had pulled from a wrecked 99 RT that i have completely rebuilt by hand and with the help of a local machine shop. Its being installed with a racing tranny. Im going completely EFI (SMPI to be more specific). Im staying completely electronic, for effeciecny, and i dont mean gas millage. The Computer is a magnum unit that came with the engine. Which im also going to be completely remapping. Im trying to save my self some guess work and a lot of time. Not to be an @$$ but on the 88 3.9L its not cable driven, its computer controlled fyi. I did an 87 3.9L the other day in the shop i work at. 2.2ls ARE cable driven however ;-).

They are cable-driven through 1991, not computer-controlled.

You sure? On my 88 it uses a magnectice type speed sensor and pick up. oh well its no point in arguing over something simple like that. Its away from the point of what i need to know. Besides its going to replaced anyways. ok back to the questions. The engine is sitting on the mounts inside the truck and pretty much im waiting on info and a day where im not so lazy to do it. So with the new pcm bolted in place along with the engine will i have to splice or cross any wires? the original wiring harness is still in under the hood and ive just been lazy... any help would be great.

Well, even mine has an electronic speed sensor for the computer to properly run the overdrive, but, to the best of my knowledge, the cable drive went away with the Magnum introduction.

Wish I could help on the splicing issue, but I haven't done anything like what you're into. In fact, when I did my 2001 360 Magnum swap, I snagged an OBDI engine harness and PCM. Granted, right now it's a carb'd setup, but I figure I'll eventually have to go MPI. My point is, I hope you get it sorted out, but when faced with the situation, I ran from it like the plague. I'm still too young for that much pain. From what I have seen, on non-computerized swaps, the builder usually only splices for power and runs the basic engine harness for the injectors, and only the instruments he wants (and has added since the older ones will not run off the OBDII PCM). Typically, they leave as much as possible to run off the older system the vehicle came with. If you choose to run the alternator, etc through the new system, you should keep the old PCM in place to handle whatever is left.

so running both computers eh? sounds plausible enough. So running my old gauges with the old pcm and just network the 2 computers right? either that or swap all the gauges i suppose... the 1st seems easy enough, but i dont want to make any mistakes on making this beast come alive. i guess my best bet is to use the wiring diagram from the 99 dak R/T and the wiring diagram from the 88 and take the 50+ hours or so of figuring it out... Or just wiring the whole freaking thing from scratch..... Eh oh well not going to be as easy as i hoped... well im lollygagging and i guess i should start up on it since its slow and i havent had a d@mn car to work on all day. Slow day at the garage for me. Thanx again and wish me lots of luck.... ill be sure to post pictures and stuff when i finish
THANX

i have decided when swapping my 95 318 into my 1990 im going to pretty much gut almsot all intirior and extririor wireing from both trucks, and swap the wiring from the wrecked 95 into the 90
because the plugs look the same but they prolly arent, there are more wires running to the intorior of the 95 (OBD1) plugs and whatnot, so im going to jsut pull it all and be done with it. Yes i know im looking at spending my whole flippin summer doing this, but oh well
