Cons: The fiberglass packing eventually burns out (but they're only $20 or so). There are some that are packed with stainless steel to achieve the same type sound, but they also cost 5 times as much. Granted, they won't burn out, so it depends on how much you're able to spend.

It's no different that any other muffler to install.

Pros: In a sea of Delta Flows, and other Flowmasters, etc, you'll definitely stand apart in the sound dept. Nothin' quite like 'em.

just put 3 GP on 01QC4.7awd-current ver have louvers facing away from flow -makes last LONG time-& NO disruption of ex pulse (as in turbos that have baffles/chambers etc) so you get max cyl scavaging effect=more HP+better MPG. Sound is personal choice-seen plenty rotted turbos;
and ARE pricey. CK out www.heartthrob.com
Installd deep-tone sys(tailpipe muffs & added 36"
GP in front of splitter-kept all cats-runs/sounds
great. Good luk w/yur truk

I had glasspack back in 2001, before any headers were made for the 4.7.
Than when i got the headers, i put Gibson from head to tail.
Glasspack will never see me again. They bother big time, (ressonance, loud aceleration and desceleration and in some rpm range, you can "FEEL" the noyse vibration on the steering wheel, on the pedals, floor etc.
Definitly a most for those looking for untreated noise.

Your experience will vary. The glasspack cherrybomb-style muffler on my "Behemoth" ('84 RamCharger, stock exhaust manifolds, single 2.5" pipe, 318) is downright mellow, and nowhere near loud even wide open. As time adds up and packing burns away, it will get louder, but this was a quickie job after the stock type muffler exploded. So, it depends on the diameter of your pipes, the size of the glassbacks, and the rest of the exhaust system. Naturally, the lower the overall restriction, and the smaller the mufflers, typically, the louder it will be. One great thing about cherrybombs, they're all welded, no seams to give out and allow explosions.

Glasspacks will be about the next loudest thing other than running straight pipes.

I think it's almost trial and error. On some vehicles, they can sound really crappy. Like if you have really small pee shooter tail pipes like I see on some of these rigs around here, or on V6 engines :p

Then there are some cases that Glass Packs sound like the best thing ever!

My dad drove a 76 Dodge some years ago that had a 400 BB that was slightly modded, long tube headers, and we had glass packs on it. I drove it several times when I turned 16 (was able to drive and wrench on cars long before I was 16). Anyway. We enever thought of getting rid of the glass packs. Everyone LOVED the way that truck sounded.
I had glass packs on a few other vehicles as well. But that truck sounded about the best.

When I was a teenager, and felt like being a fukker, I'd get the thing revved up into 1st gear, turn off the key while holding the throttle open, turn on the key and nice flames would shoot out from the truck with a loud bang!
Again. I was 16 so that was close to 20 years ago and before EFI.

My dad did the same thing with his '75 Dodge. It wasnot a glasspack, and eventually it blew the baffles out of the muffler and wouldn't do it any more. But it was funny watching people dive for cover. Ahhh, the good old days!

well right now it has a hearthrob cat back system on it, there it no real restrictions on it, the mufflers are the big cans on the end with little flares bent out on the ID of the tubing
im going to see how it sounds with those first, and maybe hollow out the Cat

well. It wasn't MY DAD doing the flames through his pipes. It was ME doing it to HIS truck when i was gone with it and with my friends.

the FIRST vehicle I figured out how to do that on was my 1975 Chevy. 350 with HEI and a Cat when it first started being mandatory.

Anyway. After this one night the muffler was blown into 3 pieces and I got busted by the cops for them "gunshots reported all over town" from my pretty red n blue flames shooting all over the midnight back roads :)

I have a 97 with a 318, i have no cat and a glasspack. under a lot of load its very deep and throaty but cruising is quiet inside the truck. it has a lot more performance with this setup too and i have had no problems with no cat. it actually runs better with out the cat on the only thing is that it smells like and old car and it shoots a flame when i shift hard (which i like)

Changing exhaust???
IP: Logged

Message:
I was wanting to change the exhaust on my 99 dakota with a 5.2L and change it all out, but I am EXTREMELY hesistant because I live in an area where emissions are done. I see posts and picks of people doing these types of changes, but I never have heard of whether or not they can pass emmisions or not....I am an "old School" type of person, meaning that I believe that restrictions just make the motor work harder and become less efficient. I would like to put headers and having it be a true dual exhaust. I have no problem putting a hi flow cats on it and mufflers and that is it. The question I have is has anyone passed emmissions after doing something similar????

I have gotten those hi flo cats on cars before and I was never been able to pass....so PLEASE let me know if anyone has gotten them to work??? I really want to do this as it will flow better and be set to overall breathe better if I acknowledge the air intake issue...Like I said I am about functionality and really simplicity....

So if you can, help me out....

Ugh glasspacks are loud. You may have trouble with inspection. I did my exhaust back in 1996 to be loud but have been doing all I could to quiet it down since. Currently I have 4 mufflers.
