I have up to $1000 set aside for my truck. I would like to get the most performance, horsepower, and/or acceleration from this budget. If I could spend less than the $1000,and still get satisfactory results, that would be great. I am a high schooler with a poor income, and I am also getting ready for college. How would the money best be used in order for me to get the best bang for the buck?

I'd put it in a savings account instead of blowing it on a truck. You just might have some rainy days while you are in school. It'd be a shame if you couldn't afford some basics while in school because your truck has some shiny new parts on it. There's always someone faster than you. Stop trying to be #1 before you go broke.

Dunno I'm in the same position. (Um) maybe the parts are for a rainy day. How else are you gonna be #1 unless you try?

come on fellas, give the young guy a break. Preston...buy some new gears, 4.10's to be exact, those plus install should run you about $500-$600, expensive yes, but the most worthwhile mod for that v-6 you got. With the $4-500 left over, get a v-8 (5.2 or 5.9) used throttle body (should be less then $100) and either a cold air intake or headers. All that should run you just around $1000 and give you noticeably more power.

I'm a senior headin off to colllge and i have a 2000 3.9L V6. I say just leave the engine alone. If you're not happy with the V6, just save up to buy a new dakota one day with a bigger motor.

Saving up for a newer dakota with a bigger engine is not going to come quickly. If you like ur truck do what you want with it... spend a grand on it if you want to rather than "save" and spend over $12000

Preston, as you mentioned about your financial situation, i don`t see spending a thousand bucks on mods in a V6, as a wise atittude, unless you do the labor yourself.
Be patiente and the time to play will come a lot faster than you think.
After all, it is your decision, and i wish you do well in school.
Good luck.

At risk of incurring wrath of all you highly intelligent folks out there, I will attempt to answer the $1000 question:Preston-you have major truck being pushed by minor motor. Dont expect miracles-HOWEVER,you can try: 1-cat-back exhaust-suggest straight thru using glass or steel pack
mufflers-no "turbos" $250(installed yourself)
2-K&N low restriction air filter-$50 3-remove mechanical fan& clutch (if you have elect.bu)FREE
4-Gearing change $$$as 4WD(both ends)-try smaller tires. 5-superchip???$$$$ Might get all for $1000...just depends-#1,2,&3 most bang for buck, & duals make for nice sound...done 123 to my 01QCAWD4.7 & pleased w/ results-more power AND
better MPG.-Good luk w/ yur truk.
