I know that the 5.9L in the grand cherokee is about the same as the 5.9L in the dakota. Is there any really differences between them and what mods should I do first (I'm thinking the K&N FIPK2. Any help would be appreciated

thanks!

Check out www.jeepsunlimited.com look at their message boards and talk to a guy named Kolak (Nick is his real name). He is the man when it comes to Grand Cherokees regardless of the motor. He will most likely recomend a K@N filtercharger, Mike Leach exhaust w/flowmaster, and high flow cat, MP computer and ignition upgrade.

Swapping the stock 145k torque convertor for the correct Mopar Performance 166k unit would go a long way towards improving the already potent launch of a 5.9 Limited. The 166k unit stalls to about 2400rpm without much change in efficiency at part throttle. This convertor was standard in 1 or 2 years of Dakota production and may be available as a less expensive service part. Reply if you are interested in more info. I'll have to do some digging.

The modifications tot he Jeep 5.9L are the same as to the Dodge 5.9L. The K&N Gen-II for the Jeepo GC is different though since the filter comes out on the driver-side (unlike the Dodge's). However, A K&N Gen-II, FastMan 50mm, Autolite 3923's, 180 T'Stat, and a set of Mopar 1.7:1 Roller Rockers really woke up my buddies 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. No custom exhaust since it already has the Mopar Perf. 3" exhaust on it.

I hate to admit it...but the '98 Jeep GC/LE is something to be reckowned with...especially off the line.

What do you think about the Mopar performance computer for my GC? I already run premium gas, so is my current computer different than the Dakota 5.9L?

I just bought a 360 out of a Jeep Cherokee, and I'm going to have it put into my Dak eventually. Yes, it is the same as any other 5.9, but as Bernd said, the air intake is on the other side. Also, the oil cap is on the other valve cover.
Is yours a new Jeep? I just got a mopar performance computer (I have a list of mods to be completed before the swap) and the 360 came with the jeep pcm, so if you are looking for one to flash, make me an offer. Oh yeah, it's a 98.

I have a 5.9 Limited. I was looking to replace the stock muffler with a Borla. Any one know the exact measurements of the one I need to order? I was also looking for a place to purchase high performance pulleys. I have seen random performance sites for the 5.9 however nothing that I liked in particular.

Thanks,

Unlike the Dodge 5.9 the Jeep 5.9 does not have a belt driven fan. The underdrive pullies don't do all that much on the Dodge and mostly the benifit probably comes from running the fan slower. Seeing as how the Jeep has only the electric fan (5.9 models at least) they probably really would gain nothing from new pullies. Doesn't Borla make a direct fit muffler for the Jepp? or do you have to buy the whole cat back setup? Either way I bet most Jeep modders would reccommend the Flowmaster 70 SUV for the Jeep. As I said eariler on this thread go to www.jeepsunlimited.com and the Grand Cherokee forum there, or the "speed freeks" forum. Both will get you plugged in on what to get and where to get it.

Hey Guys,
Thanks for all the input. I currently have the K&N injection kit, 180 Thermostat, and Jet Chip (Stage II). I was looking at exhaust next. Does anyone know the general dimensions of the stock system? Various people have told me that the factory system is a 3in system. I find that hard to beleive. I also found that Mopar offers an aftermarket 3in system for the Jeep 5.9. Has anyone had any experience with this system. The best part is the price of $299 for a 3in system. All the other systems I researched are 2 1/4 to 2 1/2in systems. I am looking for something with excellant sound quality as well. Something that sets my truck apart from any others. Any thoughts are apprciated.

Kolak (kolak@aol.com) over at the jeep board sells a true 3 inch mandrel bent tail pipe for the Jeep for under $100 I beleieve. Then he recommends the flowmaster 70 suv which is very tough (important as Jeeps actually go offroad and you could jack the whole Jeep up on the muffler without collasping it). The flowmaster is still pretty mellow sounding and is also about $100. The only other thing you may need is a short peice to connect the cat to the muffler but it is just a regular straight 3" peice. Kolak also has a recommendation for a 3" hp cat which he feels is necessary. I personally would just get a longer 3" straight pipe and drop the cat alltogether.

I had a 95 Grand Cherokee where the brakes always felt soft as well. There are a bunch of posts on www.jeepsunlimited.com about it. For some people there is something wrong in the ABS system, that is increasing pedal effort. Some have just pulled th ABS relay and then the brakes are awesome (although the ABS feature won't work). Other Jeeps are fine. Even under warranty people would show the dealer this but they would pass it off as normal, seems like a big saftey issue to me. Sseeing as how I haven't had a Jeep for a few years I don't know what the outcome was, or even if there ever was one. I'd ask again over at Jeepsunlimited or search for it there.

i just added headers, high flow cat, and 3" mandrel bent exhaust. I'll have new times tomorrow night.

I have a 5.9 GRAND as well, I live in Scottsdale Arizona and work at a Dodge dealership as a front end/suspension tech. I took my jeep to the drags one night to see what it would do. Oh yeah, the up grades are: jet chip, 3" Borla exhaust, K+N cold air intake, and I ported my throtle body. I left everything else stock, spare tire in and all.
My best time was 15.034 @ 93.6 mph! Not to bad for an August night! (About 80-85deg out) I ran consitent 15.1's around 90-91 mph. I was beating stock Mustangs and all sorts of rice burners!! I love my jeep, it's great. Next time I go I'm going to pull the trans shifter linkage back so it stays in gear longer. I have lots more in store for this beast, I want low 14's!! I really enjoy this site! Everyone keep up the good work
and GO MOPAR!!!!

i have a MAC Flowpath muffler on mine and it sounds great. Its a little like the flowmaster, but also has a rasp to it, as the flows tend to sound more like there under water. Any way the best fitting aplication is to buy a 3 in. inlet/outlet right side muffler for a mustang, they fit really well. Either way you go you will get better sound and performace.

360grand, the IAT sensor is on the passenger side of the intake manifold towards the front. Looks like a brass sensor screwed into the manifold.
Just out of curiosity, what is a 2wd transfer case? Last time I checked under my 2wd R/T, I didn't see a transfer case;)
