Considering a single in and duel out Flowmaster 40 series for my 04 4.7. How would that sound? I can't put in two mufflers, the place says there is no room for it.

You can run true duals if you like. There's enough room to tuck both of them nicely.

I have that same muffler on my '02 4.7L. I love the way it sounds. Sounds mean as hell. Only thing is when revved real high, there is a loud popping\bubbling sound from the pipes, almost like very light backfiring. Been running the flowmaster for 50k miles and no ill effects so im pretty sure it is the muffler making the sound and not the engine. Let us know what you decide.

I have a 4.7 w/a 40series on it. Single in, dual out. Used to run pipes out the back,,and like Kotagious said it will make some popping, backfire sounds if you rap it out. I got tired of clearance issues, and always breaking hangers so I chopped the pipes off at the muffler and dumped the exhaust straight down before the rear axle. Now it's way louder,,and better rumble w/it reverb'n off the ground,,you can really hear it in parking garages. I love it,,,no problems with it so far. Next muffler will be a tad quieter though,,,just for stealthyness.

I am also an owner of an 04 dak (and new to the board) with a 4.7L, Manual tranny. I would like to know how much it ends up costing you. I Would also like to know if it improves your Mileage. Currently I am getting 18.5 MPG. I put a tonneau cover on hoping to get it to come up some more... but had Absolutely no change. Please keep us informed on how it turns out.

Thanks
Chris

Dont run true duals it will rob your HP. I know because I have true dual on my 00' 4.7L and I am currently goin to a single 3" from Y to through Flowmaster 40 and out to rear. Cant wait to see the improvement when its done. Heres my rig.

A true dual exhaust will help you gain HP and torque if you use the right pipes size and have the proper modifications. Many people have gotten great gains using 2.5" true duals especially when already having mods like cams, manifold, throttle body, and some sort of air intake.

I agree. WRONG design will HURT especially DOWN LOW.

I've heard of some people with the 4.7's become very responsive to a good TRUE dual exhaust set up.

I'm gonna make one soon. I've got to do it the HARD way too. Mine only has the ONE big cat. I've got to go buy TWO small cats and mount them up close to the manifolds to operate best and then run my pipes out the side by the wheels if possible. if not, out the back.

I had a Flowmaster 70 Series with 2 1/2" duals for 3 years on my '01 4.7 RC 5-spd 3:92LSD. The Dak also has a homebrew alloy air intake with K&N drop-in, HO cams and "true" 68mm TB. Changing the front end of the exhaust system behind the pre-cats to the muffler yielded a solid 1 mpg improvement: 2 1/2" pipes into Magnaflow 2 1/2" into 3" y-pipe, 3" pipe into 3" Carsound hi-flow cat. The stock y-pipe is an absolute joke: 1 1/2" on each side into 2 1/2" exit. There is a divider plate in the center of the y-pipe than reduces the 2" entrance diameter.

you must be able to generate 300hp to the rear wheels to run a (true) no cat dual exhaust otherwise u are not makin any headway in power.

Who would be running a "no cats" dual anyway on a street driven Dak?

Like I said for the same arguement in another thread. Other small blacks like this run true duals just fine.

Mustangs for one. 5.0's and 4.6's all day long. Dual cats, dual mufflers, dual pipes.

You just have to size it properly.

GraphiteDak -
My '04 already has this configuration from the factory, with O2 sensors upstream and downstream of each, tucked right up there. You might be able to save a coupla bucks if you can wrestle one of these from a local wrecking yard or such. It's basically a big Y/crossover pipe with tiny little cats welded in where it connects to the exhaust manifolds. Not sure what other years have this setup.
The point where the crossover section joins the pipe coming down from the passenger side cat is a bit restrictive, the way the factory did it. You'll laugh out loud when you see that part.

Just my 2cents but I would H or X pipe the true duals, better scavenging and equalizes pressure between the pipes. IMO 2.25pipe and Xpipe would make for a very nice setup. No experience with the 4.7 just the 5.2.

BUDSDAK, I think it's Spintech or someone who does sell them that way. but PRICEY as fukk!

I'm going to just make mine from scratch and see what happens.
If it DON'T work, it wont be the FIRST time a experiment didn't pan out.

But I'm the kind of guy who likes making FREAKS. Stuff you try yourself instead of what someone ELSE makes/designs for you.

Kind of like my old hot rods. I've thrown together some cheap and crazy combinations and had some come out pretty damn wicked!

I agree, 2 1/4 duals would be a good starting point. I'm going to run glass packs too. For the ear shattering sound at higher RPM's.

We've got 10,000 too many fart can equipped spam cans around here! Time to show them some great sounding V8 muscle

Duely, I just put the set up you are talking about on my 03 4.7 this weekend. Single in, dual out flowmaster 40 series with pipes straight out the back. It's loud, real loud, but it sounds good. Driving around town the noise in the cab can be a little annoying but i'm sure i'll get used to it. It's not as bad on the highway.
