Subject: 5.7 hemi swap
IP: Logged

Message:
It is about time to swap motors in my 2000 dakota. I am leaning to a 5.7 hemi. Has anyone seen or heard of anyone doing it. The diminsions will fit with slight mods to the engine mount. Any advice let me know. It will be a great weekend project.
Thanks

A weekend project? If you have to ask questions about it, it will likely take the better part of the summer, that's assuming that you have a chance of success. At the very least you will be fabricating your own headers, because the stock exhaust is just one of the areas of interference. It seems that moving it forwar two to three inches would improve the chances of success and then oil pan clearance becomes a problem. Now add a custom made oil pan and pickup to the headers.

im all about people doing cool stuff to their vehicles... but -im swapping 360 for 360 in my dakota at the moment, and its kicking my arse. i dont have to fabricate a damn thing... and its a pain in the mothertruckin butt. im on day 4 --constantly running to the store, new bolts, a tool that i didnt have, washers, paint, etc etc etc etc... its a biatch dude.

id suppose youre gonna have to find yourself a donor truck, and take the motor/tranny/wiring/ out of it. ya basically gotta fool the computer that the 5.7 is in what its supposed to be in.

why do you want an over rated 5.7 anyways?... for the time/money/effort - you could put a built 4.7/5.9 in that pig and be light years ahead.

But you still can say - It's got a Hemi.

If you can do it, more power to ya. It would be worth all the ooohs and ahhhhs.

Yes I can say I have a hemi, and that is the purpose. Money is not the object, its the joy. Yes I can do it in a weekend. Just have to find the right weekend to do it in. Really busy right now with work. Way to much O.T. Anyways, it helps that my brother, dad and uncle are master cerfifed ase mechs. and my best friends dad owns a machine shop, and My girlfriends dad does custom fabrications, so the issue wont be if it can be done, but when. I was just asking for upfront advice not sarcasim. I take everyone's opionion seriousely, so if you have concerns i would like to hear them. I am sure i have not thought of everything and thats what I want to know. Oil pan clearence already took care of...

Oh there is more potentional to 5.7 hemi, then ever a 5.9 or 4.7. Who said i am going efi???

Yes, you see v10's in Dakotas and 5.7's in a number of other vehicles, but no one seems to have built a single Dakota with a Hemi. I'm sure there is a reason but darned if I know what it would be.

Some how I doubt that we will be seeing one here anytime soon.

But 8 months for the total project... getting the motor in is probably the smallest detail.

I put a motor in my truck in about 3 mins. Then I drove home and had it out in one minute. I just pushed it off the tailgate and I was done. Total time put it in and taking it out was less then five minutes.

well, its day 5 now since i first started pulling the old motor. dropped the new one in the next day. juuuust about there. as i said theres a bunch of misc gremlins i gotta take care of before i fire her up. i only get a few hours per day to work on it, i just plug away little by little all week. she'll definately be running saturday.

didnt go all out with it, becaues of cost reasons. but it is a brand spankin new crate short block, 1.92 heads, 1.7 RR's, m1 2bbl, 52mm tb, pph coated headers, etc etc etc...

here's some pics:

I dont measure my penis, ( i think a man should never say peepee, but hey whatever) my girlfriend tells me its just fine. I was replying about the mx6 because there is always those arogant people that think it cant be done. oh by the way there is less mods that have to be done then you think. smaller block then the 5.9. just bigger top half.

you dont like the hemi, good, more power to you, i do recall it is my truck and not yours. you still feel impowered to show your negativity, go ahead, i really dont care. you
sound just like my xwife (now i remember why i divorced her) thanks for the reminder.

so petey boy thanks for all your concerns about my "pipe dream" .

LMAO!! I love this tread. BTW make sure you post some pic's of the swap once it's done. Don't forget a full wiring harness'PCM,possibly all new instruments, transmission and mabye even drive shaft. Basically taking a ram and putting it on a Dakota chassis.

I thought I had a big project, started fabricating the ducting for a remote mounted turbo (under the passenger) on a 4.7L HO today.

i have zero first hand experiance in this.. but the hemi ive read is wider, and absolutely will not fit within the frame rails (torch and shoehorns aside)

it has absolutely nothing to do with arrogance, its called reality. i applaud your effort... now stfu and get started already if its really not that big of a task for you, 'the mx6 king.'

me reminding you about your xwife means your subconsious has related you and i in marriage. where i come from, we call that a fag.

add the fact that you basically advertised your penis to me, size of which endorsed by your significat other. thats strike two. 3 and youre out bud...

I wouldn't even bother with OEM instrumentation. Use F.A.S.T electronics for the injection, or go carb, and use aftermarket instrumentation. It'd cost more, but with the Hemi already at a premium price, what's a few hundred more for the easier application, instead of trying to decipher the OEM stuff. It'll fit. It's only the heads that are wider, and there's plenty of room for them. Remember, this thing fits a low-hoodline 300C, and the new Jeep Grand Cherokee. It's not bigger than a 440 or 426 Hemi, and there have been numerous transplants of these big blocks, so the 5.7 will easily fit.
