How much is 2 much pinging?
started with 87 program with 87 gas running chevron got a little pinging at about 4500 to 5000 rpm ran out all the 87 put in 93 programed with performance setting runs great but I get just a lettle pinging at the higher rpm band in 2 gear right befor it go's in to 3gear.
I DO NOT have the death flash and when stock with 87 gas I would get a little ping right be 4 it go's in to 3gear so my ? is how much is to much and should I get the death flash and then try the superchips.
Any 1 else with 2k 4.7 had this?
Any 1 with death flash and superchips get the pinging?

I have a 01 Dak with a 4.7, I have some pinging just because when my truck was owned by my brother, he ran 87 in it, then went to 93, and back to 87, I heard that most Dodge V8s Ping when this happens, It doesn't ping as much now, because I run 93 in it all the time.
I don't know about SuperChips, I don't even know if it works good, I want it though,

hummm mine dosen't ping with 93 on the 93 performance programming.. it sure did with midgrade though! i drove to the gas station and bought a bottle of oct. booster that time.. that was scary hearing my baby ping like that!!
Does your's shift a LOT harder under w.o.t accelleration? mine sure does! i can actually feel my truck SHIFT now :-)

I think it is well worth it I paid $325.00.
shifts are a lot better.
I have never had my pcm flashed and I checked with dealer to day and they said there were no updates for my 2k 4.7 auto so I ran the hell out of it today and I didn't get no pinging but it was about 85deg here in south texas so maybe it's learning not to ping.
In my case it is worth the $ made a big difference but I'am stock I just have a cold air coming off the air hat.

I usually run the 89, with the 91 oct setting. We have 93 oct here in TX, but I thought the tuner talked aobut the perf setting as the 91oct setting b/c some states only have 91oct?
Anyway, unless it's bogging around 1600 rpm, it ususally won't ping on the perf setting, running 89 oct.
And it's hard to believe that someone runs premium on a non flashed pcm, just to get rid of pinging. Mine runs great on the 87oct, w/o the s/c's higher settings that is.
I also have a 180tstat, and 3923 plugs, maybe that helps some.

so considering my mods,
K&N FIPK II, Headers, Mopar HO Cams, F&B 70mm TB, and Flowmaser exaust
so I should get better gains with the 93 octane setting with super chips?
I am seriously thinking about buying the tuner

icmopar - any pinging is too much. Do you know what the "death flash" is ? Its not something you want to get. Its a program where you lose performance due to less ignition advance. Are you sure what you are hearing is pinging; and not an exhaust leak, or something else ? Pinging occurs under a high load for the power delivered - for example, someone lugging a standard at too low a speed for that gear, or someone towing a heavy load. It wouldn't make much sense for your motor to be pinging when you claim it is (high rpm in second gear), the engine is making good power there, and shouldn't be pinging there if it wasn't at low rpm. With their aluminum heads, 4.7s aren't very prone to pinging; even with the extra ignition advance I have with the Leach flash, I only need to run premium when towing. Other than that, it runs fine on regular.

icmopar, If I am not mistaken, pinging can also be caused by carbon buildup. Not sure if you have any, but you might run a good cleaner through your fuel system and into your engine. Might help.

ICMOPAR,
First off, I am running a Super Chips tuner set on Performance and running 93 octane...and I have 105k miles on my 2000 CC Dak and I ran 87 octane up until I put the SC tuner on it at 102k miles.
The only time I hear any pinging is when I muststoop to using 87 octane cuz I only have a few bucks in my pocket until payday. Other than that, I occasionally hear pinging on 89 but it is there. I never hear it on 91 or 93 octane though.
As for the "death Flash", I had it.
The SuperChips tuner copies your original factory program into its memory and then completely DELETES/ERASES the factory program from your trucks computer and then uploads a fresh SuperChips program (87 performance, 93 performance, & 93 performance/towing) to replace it.
If you never got stuck with the "death flash" then don’t bother going and getting it. I only got mine flashed with it after the stealership upgraded my software due to my trans. needing some kind of software update.

so far so good no pinging in the last 3 days maybe I had some left over 87 in the tank.
went to the dealer last Friday to see if my pcm needed any updates I have never had my pcm flashed 4 anything,2k 4.7 and they told me there were no updates for my vin#.
I know there are some updates but the bumb A$$'S at the dealer don't know what they are looking for.
All I know is I have no pinging and it runs a whole lot better, it don't have the low idle any more, get good shifts at wot and it will now break'em lose from a roll 4.7 auto 3.55 gear lsd.
I think it is worth it for the 4.7.
