Does anyone know if it is worth spending my $90CAN on a K&N air filter? Or, is it a waste...Im just wondering if it is going to give me noticeable performance all on its own. Also, does anyone know how much horsepower it adds?

You really don't buy it to add horsepower and I bet it doesn't
add even half of one. You buy it because it flows better than
paper and it is washable.

Oh, well i guess that answers my question, on the K&N website it says it gives a 2-4percent increase in horsepower but then again I guess that is a way of getting people to buy it. I also heard that it improves gas mileage, anybody have any answers to that.

I put a dropin on my 99 5.2 4x4 when it was about a year old. I gainned nothing but the satifaction I didn't need to worry about a little dirt on it (so they advertize) No exta HP> No differance in fuel consumption either > But When passing hard or taking on a steep hill it sounds tuff because you heard it taking on air in the intake > I have only cleaned it twice in 5 years and it was not visably dirty but dirt did wash out with the water> I assume it never needed cleaning even that often cause it made no noticeable differance in running >

what helps reduce fuel consumption? hmmm.
keep your tires properly inflated(check them at least twice a month) and your truck aligned.

keep your revs under 2k.

keep your speed under 65.

keep your vehicle properly tuned.

put syn fluids in tranny, engine and diff.

that should cover it. good luck

2-4% horsepower increase is what they are saying? Wow. I still don't believe it. If it really does this, it doesn't matter, it would take a dyno to show that gain.

As far as washing you really should do it a couple times a year. I do it like every 4 months or when I remember and you'd be suprised how much black water pours out of that thing just from city driving, no off road. It's like the water you get from cleaning your carpets, nasty. That makes me feel good about the investment.

Jared - you heard that chips were a waste on the 4.7 ? That's what is commonly said about the Jet chip in particular; but the 4.7 responds quite well to extra ignition advance - wether from a chip that actually works, or a custom PCM flash.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

no its a waste just save up a little more and build ur own air intake or buy one, u can buy a cone filter instead of the drop in and then some abs piping and build a true cold air design which works well.

After I added my Filter Injection kit to my 96 it mad a 8 hp gain at the wheels. It might add more to the genII's because the stock intake system was terrible.

I dynoed, and on one run, I took out the K&N drop in thats in my completely home brewed (cept for the filter box) 'true' CAI.

When I took it out, It actually gained 1 more hp max. I didn't have my old paper one to put in, but I know they mean K&N vs. the stock paper one.
Who isn't trying to sell you one, that has actually dynoed paper, then K&N, on the same set of runs? 2-4%? Yea right.

the k&n is allows more airflow than a stock paper. combined with a free flowing cat and muffler you will see an hp increase. i have no experience with the jet chips but i am convinced my superchip was worth the money. it displays dtc's, can optimize for 87 or 91 plus octaine or towing and all you do is plug it in under the dash and do what it tells you then disconnect, nothing gets physicaly installed under the hood.

Did it twice.

2002 Ram 4.7 5 spd auto 3.55 rear 4x4 QC
tonneau 265 / 17s > tested without, then with K&N drop-in air filter same road, same trip, same time of day, same weather & temp
> 2 mpg gain with K&N

2004 Dak 4.7 5 spd auto 3.55 rear 4x4 QC
Lear cap 245 / 16's > dropped in K&N right away and tested several times >last test actual math to check computer - 19.9 mpg US @ 65 mph 41 degrees F

Better mileage at 50 mph if I want to go that slow
