ive had a 16" hayden electric fan installed for about 2 weeks, however, with the warmer weather that is now here it seems to be giving me the "slow cooking" effect rather then actually cooling my engine down. its on a 318 V8, is this engine just 2 big for the fan or is there something that should be done. Coolant is topped up, new stat. nothin else i can think of. any ideas would be much appreciated. thnx

Just what do you mean by "slow cooking"? Does the temp gauge max out at 200 or elsewhere? Describe what's happening in greater detail.

there is no leveling out point, it is just a gradual rise in temp unless the truck shuts off or the air temp outside is fairly chilly. the fan does nothing to level out the engine temp when idling at a stop or cool the engine, rather just slows down the temperature from rising to rapidly

Sounds like a shroud issue. That fan cfm sould be ok.

do you have any leaks anywhere?

rad cap and the waterpump. impellers do wear.

The condition of the radiator could be the culprit. Is it old, clogged, air blockage? We've all pretty much covered it for you. Good luck!

While the Hayden 16" works for most it also "slow cooked" my V6 in the summer months with the A/C on. Either look at upgrading to the Flex-A-Lite BlackMagic "Extreme" 180 (3300cfm single 16" w/shroud) or the Viper Fan conversion kit.

The Hayden 16" doesn't have enough CFM for a 318 with the A/C on (and barely enough for a 3.9L with the A/C on).

I had a 16" s-blade fan on my 318, it couldn't even keep up when the temps were in the 60s or 70s. Instead of getting a bigger fan, I just bought a smaller 12" fan, moved the 16" into the upper corner of the radiator, and put the 12" in the opposite corner in on the other side of the radiator and used it as a pusher. Seems to be fine so far, but temps have barely hit 80 here too. I agree with the above post, I just don't think one 16" fan is enough for a 318.

Other issues as mentioned above could be a worn out water pump, poorly sealing radiator cap, clogged radiator, etc. May also want to backflush your heater core, that helped a lot for me. Last summer I had to pull the radiator out, take the reservoirs off, and flush the radiator hardcore, it was clogged as all get out. Just some other ideas to think about. Good luck.

It depends on the CFM output of the fan. A normal 5.0+ liter engine will need about 2800-3000cfm with the A/C on. The BlackMagic fans do this without issues (and the Extreme 180 also comes with a shroud that fits over the Dakota/Durango radiators almost perfectly). The Viper fan is also at 16" with a CFM rating of 3000-3300.

There's a few Durango's now running the BM 180 Extreme fan setup without issues and quite a few 408CID Dakota's with the Viper fans. None have overheating issues.

On the original issue - my bet is on the fan and not enough CFM to cool the radiator properly.

how about for a 05 Dak 4.7 Magnum (not HO).

Thanks

Yes, the Viper fan works on the '05 Dakota's (4.7) - already installed two of them. It's actually much easier to install as well - no need for a bunch of custom mounting brackets as you can easily use the factory mounts. :)

BTW: The 4.7L HO cams work bitchin' in the '05 Dakota's. Definitely a nice increase and easier to install in the new body style.

I agree with ScojoDak.

if it's not a radiator issue as well.

But a SHROUD is a MUST.

My dad's little 4 banger Nissan even had an issue last summer. in the winter before he hit an Elk!
Replaced the front end,INCLUDING a new radiator, but no one (where he lives) had a clutch fan set up. So we threw in a electric. That summer he started to cook.

Then he brought it to my house (before the heat of the day) and I made him a sheet metal shroud to hold two small Checker auto cheapo fans.

It don't overheat now!

This is in Arizona of course.
