Subject: Drilling your airbox
IP: Logged

Message:
I've heard different things on this topic so wanted to post here to see what the deal is. If I have a K&N air filter in my 2001 Dak with the 4.7L Auto will drilling holes in the lid on the air box actually do anything?

thanks for any info.

I can only see a performance loss if you did that, it would mean the engine would draw hot engine bay air into it.

You might get this, but doubt that you will get anything else.

"I would however, recommend this modification to everybody who would like to add a unique (but not disturbing) sporty sound to their car...."

Most of the added power, if any, will come from the K&N drop in filter.

Don't forget to drill some "speed holes" into your hood too, just like Homer did.

andy_d, below is a reply on the same thread from http://www.cavweb-forums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=11836

quote: Along with bucketloads of hot air from your engine bay (especially on a V6). Best option for the V6 is to modify the cold-air feed and fit a decent panel filter.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i'm not, nor is anyone else trying to burst your bubble, but either leave the drop in filter (and the airbox) alone, or get yourself a bonafide "cold air intake" with a heat shield.

FYI...Homer did not "drill" speed holes in his hood, he used a pick axe :) However, if you want to drill holes in your airbox you should just use a pick axe anyway, because that way you'll destroy your airbox and have to make/buy a real air intake.

Thanks all!! the speed holes comment was killer!!! Guess I'll just save some $$$ and get a true intake. This uber drilling "technique" seems more of a joke than anything.

thanks all.

I think he's referring to the lower half of the intake box, before the filter.

Beerhat is right, OBIO3.
Never drill holes in your intake box on the "engine side" of the filter. It would render your filter useless.

BeerHat...Good to see that there's another one around Bozeman! Where do you work here? I saw a Patriot Blue Quad at Murdoch's with a nasty dent in the bumper, hope it's not yours. LOL. You'll see me driving around a white Ranger with a utility topper that says OneEighty Communications. Couldn't get em' to buy a dak after I wrecked the first Ranger!

Hey Sloot- I've been living here for about 2.5 years, werkin at RightNow Technologies. Not only a fellow dak owner-- but a fellow geek too eh? cool! BTW, That's not my dak at the BIG R (and it will always be BIG R to me), mines a dirty clubcab... and is for the most part dent free. Dude, I know there are more of us here, we should get a group together (hopefully someone with a winch) and go on a lightweight mud-run somewhere. Not sure where, but we could probably find a place I'm sure.

Check it out, took this at Taylor Fork a year or so ago:

Of course everyone is missing the point on weight advantage.

Drilling more holes in your truck will decrease the weight.

I say....drill away.....drill out the frame rails, the body panels, the interior, etc.

More holes = less weight = faster times
