We use it in our race car because it is against the rules to use anti freeze. It does seem to lower the water temp about 5 degrees, but it also helps with corrosion in the aluminum radiator and heads. For a street car,I dont think you would see much benefit. Just my opinion.

Helps with corrosion.and lowers water temp by 5-8 degrees. Seems worth the few bucks for a lower operating temp. doesn't it? Same idea as a lower temp. thermostat is trying to accomplish.

It does more than just lower the water temp. It's a surfactant, so it decreases water surface tension. That allows the water to "stick" to the metal surfaces better. This allows better heat transfer between the water and the metal. If you're getting a little detonation in the summer, this will probably help by cooling the heads better.

I agree with the above "interesting read" I've dealt with Water wetter, as a sales person dealing with classic Mustangs, and it appeared thru doing this, that only the older unrebuilt engines really saw any gains, and it had to be added in with new coolant and distilled water for best results, it seemed that tap water contaminants seemed to negatively affect its performance.
here's my .02 cents... want a cooler engine? get a high performance electric fan, and/or use a cooler thermostat, and if you have an automatic, use a tranny cooler. I've run a 180 thermo, for three years, and my truck stays cool all year, even through the summer in Miami last year... and I've removed the clutch fan on mine ( I ahve an R/T with the stock electric fan)... I've also added a tranny cooler after the thermo, and noticed a 5-10 degree drop from that too. Only when I'm sitting still does it even warm up enough to even kick on the electric fan.
Another thing to remember is antifreeze is just that... it prevents FREEZING... I know plenty o people that run straight water alone in the summer, without any problems.
01 R/T, FIPK, 180 thermo, tranny cooler, autolite 3923, removed factory header heat shields, underhood insulation... runs right around 170-180.

Anti-freeze doesn't just prevent freezing, it also has a much higher boiling temperature than plain water. Plain water causes one of the very things that water wetters try to prevent. I'm not saying that it can't be done under ideal conditions, I'm just saying that you are putting your engine at risk.

You are right about using distilled water. It helps to prevent a buildup of scale or lime. Most tap water is full of minerals which stay behind when the water evaporates.

I'm not sure if someone has said this or not, but I have heard that the reason that a 50/50 solution is run is because either water or antifreeze has better properties to absorb heat and the other has better properties to release it. I think that water releases heat better than antifreeze and antifreeze absorbs heat better than water. So we run 50/50 to get the best of both worlds. You can run straight water and straight antifreeze, but i don't think either one is really suggested. I have seen this several places. I think this is the whole purpose of this "Water wetter" so it can stick to hotter point in the engine as was stated.

Matt
