Tell you what, I had a Magnaflow muffler installed and I thought it sounded good, until I took a trip to Las Vegas,NV. There was a DRONE noise at about 67 MPH that was loud. Well when I got back I ordered the original muffler and had it installed. Guess I am too old for noise (64 years old)!
Sure sounds good again!

I have a 40 series Flowmaster on my Dak, it is Loud enough, it hurts my ear drums when I get to about 4,000 Rpms, Mashing it. but then again, the Intake helps make it louder, and so do the headers, to give it that old fashioned Muscle car sound.

whatever you do, do not get a straight pipe, it may be loud, but over time it might harm your valves.

you need a little back pressure,

I'd go with the 40 series flowmaster, like what SGT. G was explaining, it is loud enough.

Please explain how not having a muffler can harm your valves.

My 40 series is loud as hell, and has a nice deep rumble, I noticed a sound difference when I put headers and cams on too, and with the FIPK it sounds even better.

to answer your question, I think mine is the original. my brother put it on 4 years ago, and i think he got the original, not the delta flow.

I think the delta flow may have more HP gain, but not much. all I know is, my truck ( my opinion ) is the loudest and fastest dakota in the area.

its so easy now-a-days to har a truck go by and say, "woopty-doo, he’s got a flowmaster 40-series"

personaly i think the flowmaster 40series / 40series delta are overkill, loud enough where people look at you and say "dose that a-hole have an ego problem",
and the interior resonance is enough to give anyone a headache or make a baby cry.

on the other hand, the 50-series sounds mildly loud , loud enough where people look at you and say dizzam! that sounds sweet. Also the rumble you hear from inside the cab is nice

I have 50-series and love it, and my neighbors hear me coming up the street but dont mind because it sounds good.

don't say a 40 series doesn't sound good, because it does. everybody I know thinks it sounds really good. I am from Western VA, so most people have really loud trucks, some sound like crap and others sound nice.

mine isn't loud enough to blow an eardrum, we have plenty of cummins with straight pipes that will do that. my brother for instance, just got a straight pipe on his 2003 2500 HD RAM, with a Cummins HO, it sounds good, but I will say it is TOO loud. a 40 series on a dakota, is not nearly as bad as that.

I will say this. it wasn't nearly as loud until I put headers, and an intake on it.

the headers gave it a more deep steady rumble, and the slanted pipes changed the tone a bit, and the intake, well, most of yall know what that'll sound like.

This is very true Mr. ugh , sorry for the exaggeration, but it was clear that my statement was an opinion since it started off with “personally i think”…

…also a few other people in this forum have very similar opinions:

- “I have a 40 series Flowmaster on my Dak, it is Loud enough, it hurts my ear drums when I get to about 4,000 Rpms”

- “My 40 series is loud as hell”

we all have diff tastes, we’ll leave it at that…

On my 01, 4.7, Quad cab, amoung other things, I only removed the third main cat. Louder slightly, got a rasp when you rev it, and NO drone at any speed.

Passes the OBD2 emissions test also, cause there's no o2 sensors at the 3rd cat.

I've dynoed, but not with removing the cat as the only change. I know it helped some.
