i hear alot of people are changing their 190 deg. thermostat to a 180. i've noticed that JEG'S has a 160 deg. thermostat for the same price. is the 160 to low or is it better than the 180?

NO....do not use the 160..it will cause your OBDII to throw a code saying that the motor is running too cold for too long (and it will not go away)

the 180 is the best

I have the 160 stat in my set up. It helps to warm the engine and and keeps cool enough not to overheat during a heavy foot session. I live in Florida so maybe its ok to run 160 here - Ive run up to the northern states a few times and would run the 180 if I were to stay up there as the engine temp isnt so prone to over heat.

93superdak, your comparision is not valid. Your truck uses an entirely differn't engine management system.

wear rates are a lot higher at 160. they stabilize approaching 180, with a very small difference at the stock 195.

The post on wear rates is exactly correct. 180 really is the best to use for a street engine. I read a post on another forum where a guy with a bunch of mods on his 4.7 dyno'd with all 3 thermo's and all were within 1 hp. I will say when I put in a 180 in mine it did feel slightly more responsive though but not a big difference. Fuel mileage dropped slightly also. About 1/2-1 mpg. average. Due to the fuel not atomizing as good from the colder temp. Many things to consider when doing the swap.

Steamed -

No comparing goin on - and its valid for my setup - I was giving an example of where it could be used. In my setup it doesnt take long to get from 160 to 180+ , especially here in Florida.

I live in Northern Indiana and cannot use a 180 thermostat in the winter, I cant get any warm air in the truck, with the 195 in, I get lots of heat. If you live in the south, you dont have to worry about it, go with the 180.
