i got a 440 from a 78 newyorker w/ 79000 miles and im tearing it down to redo the gaskets and put a performer rph intake on it.I want to get a lot of hp out of it so i think i should do something to the heads b/c its compression is like 8:1 stock. How much should i shave them so i can still use regular pump gas. What comp will i have and how much would it cost. Also i plan on porting them.should i do anything with the valves and rockers? thanks

If you want a lot of hp out of that engine, dump those crappy stock heads. Even basic out of the box edelbrocks will out perform them by a large margin.

Once you open it up you'll likely find compression is even a little less than 8:1. 9:1 will run fine on pump gas, milling the intake side of the head a corresponding amount will insure proper fit of the intake manifold.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

No special length pushrods are needed. These will solve any milling issues:

it will take a lot more than that...

here's what i did to my 76' 400 Block that should have the same 452 casting heads as you.

btw.. it's "8.2:1" compression came out to be 7.6:1 after cc'ing the stock heads and measuring the deck height.

I milled the heads .072 off the chamber side and .086 off the intake manifold side to allow the manifold to line up.

.072 off the intake took me from 95cc combustion chambers to 78cc combustion chambers (keep in mind that the stock heads can measure anywhere from 88cc to 95cc due to high quality control at the casting plant[/sarcasm]).

I ended up with 8.9:1 compression with the following measurements

4.34" bore
3.38" stroke
.030" head gasket
.090" deck height
flat top pistons
78cc combustion chamber

now you have more stroke so that should take you up a little bit more in compression. If i used a .020 steel shim gasket, i would of had 9:1 compression, but i was suggested not to use steel shims with a shaved head.

the edie heads are good if you have the compression and rpms to back them up... but are not cost effective on a low to average compression motor. The stock 906/452 heads flow very well up to .500" lift. About as much lift as any street big block needs... that's why the mopar purpleshaft 509 is very popular (even though it's an ancient design)
