Message:
i want to get more "acceleration" out of my 3.9 v6. i've done a little bit of reading on replacing the ring gear and pinion and not sure which to go with. i have the 3.55 (8.25") gears and i want to know which to go with, the 3.92 or the 4.10? is there a big difference between the two? if anybody knows of any other cheap mods that improves acceleration, pls let me know!

Gears are your best bang for the buck. As to which is better and how much differance there is between, I'd need to know more. I particular, tire size and trans type.

There isn't a whole lot of difference between 3.92 and 4.10. If you are going to spend the money, I'd get the 4.10's and get that extra bump.

OK, here's out it works out. As far as I can find out, your 5 speed has a 4.01 first gear and a 0.73 5th gear. If you assume a 29.1" tire and a 2500 shift point, here's what your speeds would be:

.......3.55.....3.92.....4.10
1st....15.2.....13.7.....13.1
5th....83.5.....75.6.....72.3

my grandpa has a 98 dakota v-6 with the 3.55 rear end.. I have a 99 Dakota 4x4 with the 3.9, and the guy i bought it from ordered the factory 3.92 rear end, and it did make a difference and it helps alot considering its the 3.9. I'd say either one you can get for the cheapest, but you'll love the difference. 3.55 = sluggish for the 3.9
