One of the best things you can do to improve traction with the 4.7 is install HO or even better cams. You'll convert some of that low end tork that's breaking your tires loose into high end HP that will get you down the track.

Traction bars will help a lot, but with the 5-speed, you've got to keep in mind slapper bars don't work until the stops contact the spring so easy off the clutch.

RUN YOUR TIRES AT THE RATED PRESSURE. I can't understand why people think running street tires with low pressure would provide more traction. The only way to get the entire tread surface making proper contact is with the rated pressure. If you are running slicks then they will flex and conform to keep the traction surface on the ground so, with slicks, lower tire pressure will help your vehicle 'sit back' giving you better weight transfer.

Weight transfer is the whole story in getting traction off the line. That means keeping your tires from breaking loose long enough to get your vehicle's weight onto the back axel. If your tires start spinning before you see your hood rise then go easier on the clutch and take a little longer to get into the throttle. It will feel counter-intuitive, but your 1/4 times will actually improve.

Take it from a former drag racer. I ran a 1970 Maverick with a 351 windsor (all motor) that would carry the front tires 60' on 9" slicks. Of course, I ran a spool and ladder bars so I could slide my foot sideways off the clutch at 4500 RPM when I left the line at the strip :)

I'm well aware that a pickup is hard to get traction with...then again pickups aren't meant to be raced, but who has that stopped before? I don't understand why you have to hear $hit from 10 different people every time you try to ask a question on a site meant for just that. Thanks to everyone who has provided meaningful feedback and to the others, find something better to do.
