 Subject: Gen II rearend

i have a 91 extra cab dakota w/318 auto with the 8.25 rear and 3.55 gears. I am looking to upgrade to LSD and possibly 3.92 gears. i would like to do an entire axle swap. what years came with what. will Gen III rearends fit?

You want a '91 to '96 rear for a direct bolt-in. Gen III rear ends ('97 to '04) are about 2" wider.

You can upgrade your rear with a Sure-grip and a set of gears. Try Randy's ring & pinion. I got a set of gears and sure grip for my 97 from them, very nice parts at a good price.

Back in 1993 (when I ordered my Dakota) the 3.92 gearing was the standard for limited slip. The 3.55 gear was an option if you bought the 2000lb payload option. Mine has a whine that started at about 175,000 miles, but it still works good at 224,000 miles. I changed the fluid every 50,000 and used the Mopar additive.

so if it is a posi it should have 3.92's. how would I correct my speedometer after that?

3.55 LSD was also available. My '95 had a 3.55 LSD from the factory.
