Subject: Will 3923s help??

I recently bought the new superchips tuner with the programming for the 4.7L. I get pretty bad detonation with the "performance" setting programmed in, unless I use 93 octaine gas (duh). My current spark plugs are autolite AP5224 (platinum tip) I know I'm going to hear it for using plat. plugs with the 4.7L. But they haven't given me any problems yet.. But the platinum tip makes for an even hotter spark, exacerbating the problem.

Here's the question..

Sice the 3923s are a colder plug (and I would be using the non plat. plugs) Do you thing it would enable me to use midgrade? If so, would I loose any performance? the only performance loss I could think of, would be caused be detonatoin.. right? plus the fact that its very harmful to my engine..

Thanks for the insight/info.

P.S. It runs like a raped ape with the superchips program installed, and the tranny shifts MUCH harder under WOT :-)

Detonation has a variety of causes. Too much timing is a big cause, and so is cylinder heat. Going to a colder plug may help.

But what thermostat do you have? Check the literature that came with the superchips, but I believe it's programmed to use a lower temp. That will lower cylinder head temps and may control detonation. You might also add a surfactant like Water Wetter.

^ what he said. doesn't that 4.7 have aluminum heads? you could also have some carbon buildup in the combustion chambers. try cleaning them out with something like Seafoam or just plain water dribbled down the throttle body with the engine running and you working the throttle to keep it from stalling.

Don't get me wrong, the truck does not detonate when I use premium. I just want to find a way where maybe I can run midgrade to save a few $$s at the pump.. I might consider swapping in a 180 stat when I flush my cooling system this summer as well..

Try mixing 1/2 tank of regular with 1/2 tank of premium. Assuming 87 and 93 octane, the mix should be around 90.

If the truck does not detonate on premium, but does on mid grade, then you just have to suck it up and buy premium. I bet if you read the mabnual it tells you that, too.

The biggest thing these programmers do is advance the timing. It usualy provides a pretty good performance increase; it did the same thing back in the 60's. Unfortunatly, that also increases likelyhood of detonation. SO you just have to use higher octane fuel. Life is full of trade offs.

I used one of thes for my 5.9 truck, and it made a huge differance in performance. I both the 89 octane tune and the 91 octane tune. The differance from stock was pretty noticable by the butt-o-meter. But the differance between 89 and 91 was not really noticable to me. So I stuck with the 89 tune and mostly use mid grade. If it's really hot, or I'm hauling a heavy load, I'll add about 1/2 tank of premium.

I guess I can try the colder plugs... But it seems that I will have to just buy the high grade fuel when I have it set to the "performance" setting. who knows, maybe they (colder plugs) will help enough that I can use midgrade :-) D@MN these gas prices LOL!

daffydak, you're looking at up-front cost of the 93 octane. You may find that the engine is more efficient with your mod combination on 93 octane, so that the 5% difference in cost between mid-grade and premium is cancelled out. Take some MPG readings; most likely you can "have your cake and eat it too".

Lol yeah that's what I thought :-) Ah well, the price of performance :-P I have a Shell station near my house, and I heard that their "V-Power" preimum is supposed to be better then premium at other stations.. I'm not sure on how true it is, but I'm going to start fueling up with the red nozzle.

No offense but where I live the difference in price between mid grade and premium is 4-5 cents. With a 20 gal tank you only save $1.00 by using the midgrade.

its generally 20 cents difference from regular where I live.. and it's a 10 cent diff. between regular and midgrade. for example the shell and the speedway nearby my house have their fuel priced as follows. reg- 1.89 plus- 1.99 premium- 2.09.. So i could stand to save a few bucks per fillup at least. but I guell I will just suck up the difference... I'm not complaining, I just wanted to save a few $s :-)

thanks for the replies.

I just tried a tank of 89 with the Perf program, and got enough pinging that I added some 93 to it.

I'm going to try mixing 87 and 93 to see if that stops the pinging. That mix should make 90 for the same price as 89. It's not quite 91, but we'll see if it's enough. If not, back to 93.....
