Subject: Hardwood differential?

Message:
I bought a new 04 2wd CC V-8 Dak back in May of 04.
The owner's manual indicates changing the fluid in the differential every 12,000 miles.
I asked the dealer about that and they say they
recommend doing it every 15,000 miles - at a cost of $125.00.
What the F%^k gives here? I tow nothing and I don't run offroad.
I had a 92 Dak 2wd V-6 for 12 years and retired her with 200,000 miles and never touched the rear end.
Is this a reasonable maintenance item?
Thanks in advance.

Just another way for the 'ST'ealers to grab your money .
Sounds like they are using a very poor " fluid "..

Why not just do what they say. I get it done once a year along with the radiator and trans fluid. Throw 10 bucks a month into a jar and get it done. I just spent 16 grand on a 04 dakota last year. If im paying that much money for something, im not going to skimp on maintainance.

I think it's thier way to make a lot of money on unnessasary maintenance,,, and to deny warranty claims if thier maintenance schedule isn't followed correctly.

$125 for a couple quarts of gear oil and some silicone, that's why I do my own maintenance ;-)

I just changed my ring and pinion from a 3.55 to a 4.10 on my '04 at 12,000 miles and I can tell you the fluid looked like new when it came out.

Just have it done at a good local shop. I'm a service writer for a shop here in Duluth, our hourly rate is $70 bucks an hour and that would cost at most 70 bucks at our shop probly closer to 60. As long as you have record of it done that's all that matters for the warranty.

04 Sport if its new when it comes out thats a good thing. I own an 88 myself and change my manual trannys oil and my differential fluid every 20k miles. Ive seen what happens to not changing fluid and running it hard. Then again that job earned me a lot of money so i cant complain.... :-D Anyways, I do recomend it but its not a 100% top priority like oil, coolant etc. Id say every 15-30 would be substational.
