does trango make a shift kit for the 45rfe trans? if so how much would it cost to have someone install it? i dont feel comforatable with pulling the valve body down isnt there springs and little ball type deals in there that could fall out when removing? it wouldnt be to bad if all the work to be done was to the valve body then you could just sit on your garage floor take your time and figure out the instructions. but if you gotta do a lot of trying to figure out what to do under the truck without no lift what a pain in the a$$.

thanks for any responses

I did a shift kit on my 44RE ('97 318). I wasn't sure about how easy it would be either, but after reading through the instructions a few times and checking out a few posts on here I decided to give it a shot. It's really not too bad. I'm by no means a hardcore gearhead, I change my oil and stuff like that but this was by far the biggest thing I've attempted. As long as you've got some time and patience it's not too big of a deal. I'd say go for it.

Like he says, it really isn't that hard of a job. I did it on 71 buick a few years ago, (no lift either, just a garage floor). You do have to be carful of losing the little check balls and making sure they stay where they are supposed to be. The hardent part was getting the valve body boltd back up to the transmission. The valve body on my TH400 was way heavier than it looks. You need one hand to hold the valve body up to the trans, and the other hand to get the bolts started. All while trying not to bump the little check balls off their spot. I swear I couldn't move the arm that was holding the valve body for almost 2 days afterward. Just read the instructions a few times first and work slow. Its not that tough.

Hehe, don't let him fool you. Getting the valve body back in the tranny on my '97 dakota (not a '71 buick) was a piece of cake. If I could offer a few hints they would be: 1.) Make sure you have a large work area, that is very clean, and lots of rags. 2.) Be careful taking apart the valve body, just don't throw the son of a gun apart and you won't lose any balls (no pun intended). 3.) Have a friend help, it makes things a lot easier having a second set of hangs. 4.) Read the instructions through about 5 times before you start. 5.) Don't do anything stupid. It's really not a big deal. If you get in and find your stuck or you think you screwed up just post some questions on here. A few months ago I almost walked a guy through it step by step on a forum. Somebody's guaranteed to help, although you'll probably get a few dumbass replies too. Again, I'd say go for it, good luck.

There wont be a shift kit like that for a 45RFE. It's fully electronic unlike the TH400 and older Chrysler tranny's.

The older tranny's used mechanical governors, downshift shuttle valve (tied to the throttle), vacuum modulators (Ford and Chevy) and a whole mess of springs in the valve bodies.

The electronic tranny's just have selenoids and a "brain" to tell it which pack to apply, fluid pressure, etc.
Any shift kit would be a "program".

That tranny was mechanical. Simple mods are as simple as removing the accumulator spring (made to SOFTEN the otherwise more harsh shifts for grandmas and the likes) and the line pressure would be a simple adjustment as well. those would give some improvement in that tranny right there.
More involved mods would be a new seperator plate with diff size holes and modified springs in the valve body.
