Subject: Transmission Leaking on Garage Floor.
IP: Logged

Message:
I've noticed that my transmission is leaking in my 1995 Dakota with the automatic transmission has 115,000 miles and I was wondering if anyone has ever tried those transmission additives which are supposed to help seal up leaks? I saw it at pepboys the other day and figured I'd give it a shot unless someone knows something I don't know about them destroying the transmission or anything like that. Any help would really be appreciated.

I would just replace the seal thats leaking. I dont like adding additives to anything in my truck.

Check the seals at the back of the transmission and the input shaft to the transfer case. I work a Chrysler dealer and they are notorious for leaking.

Most engine and tranny additives are pure snake oil, I would never use them. However, I had a front pump leak on a 4x4 which was going to require the removal of the tranny and transfer case to fix the pump seals, not something that I was looking forward to.

I dropped $10 on some tranny stop leak and what do you know it stopped the leak. I can't remember the name of it, but it was in a silver can with blue writing, popular brand that has been around for a long time. I talked to other people who have used this same brand and it also stopped leaks and resolved shifting problems for them.

If the leak is from a seal which is easy to replace, just replace the seal. If it's going to require pulling the tranny, why not try the stop leak first?

Just did my tranny seal last weekend. It wasn't that hard and took maybe about 2 hrs. to do. Drop the drivelines and transfer case then pop the old seal out, tap the new one in, and put it back together.
