Is there such a thing? Would have to be synthetic right?

I'm interested in using a 10w30 for my 2001 4.7 for those hot temp summer driving...choices are Royal Purple, Red Line, and Amsoil

Which is the best, has a proven 'track' record, and is recommended by all you power hungry DAK drivers for tweaking out some more HP?

BTW, any reason why I should use 5w30 for summer driving?

Thanks in advance!

Horsepower TV endorses Royal Purple and they claim a 5% increase in horsepower. I'm Skeptical, but If you just got 2-3 h.p. out of it then that's pretty good for oil. I've heard redline is excellent in tranny's and rearends but I've never heard about their motor oils. I hear Amsoil is good but again never seen any actual claims as far as horsepower. I think I would try the Royal Purple 10-30 and use a mobil 1 oil filter.

I use redline 10-40 in my 99 R/T, It is a full synthetic, motors don't seem to like it at first, you get some noise or chatter until the synthetic goes throughout the entire engine. It is very slick, and I know from use in many motorcycles that have problems with clutch plates from having little friction. After 1,000 miles I will use redline in my truck as long as I own it. It is pricy but it works, I can fax you all kinds of figure off of dynos which show a 10 hp increase but they all vary and I am not out to get HP from oil. Retail is 7.95 qt

good luck,

John

either amsoil is the best but its so minutely better its not worth the almost twice price of mobil 1. Motor oil will not give you much of a POWER increase but it will help your engine last longer if you run synthetics and change your oil every 7500 miles or so. Dont forget to get a synthetic oil filter while your at it too...wix makes a good one.

Hello Everyone, I am not brand loyal just yet. I have mostly used mobile 1 because I can buy it in just about every country that I have lived in and I know that it is a good product. I currently am testing Penzoil Synthetic with their"Penzine" addative package. I intend to test it once I have 5000 miles on it. I still need to drive another 2000 miles before I will have 5000 miles on this oil. This is a slow going process because I have to wait to accumulate the miles on each batch of oil before I can test it. I will post the results as I complete each test. I will am going to test Mobile 1 next and then probably Amsoil. All oils are 10W30 and I am useing the Mobile M204 filter for all tests. I drive the exact same route and speeds every day so it will be a vary fair compairison. I might also try royal purple. I think their might be a place in my town that carrys it. Redline is not available in my town and I am not willing to mail order my mobile oil.

Someone said something about valve train chatter. This is a signe of a defective anti-drain back valve. It is common with Fram (allied signal) filters. If money is an issue it is hard to beat the plain jane Duraguard filter put out by A/C Delco. They are made by champion and they are 2-3 times better than Fram at the same price. If you can afford a premium filter Like the PureOne by puralator or Hastings which sell for $5.00 they are both very close in performance to other higher priced premium filters. Baldwin makes the filters that amsoil sells as their own and they also sell Hastings. Redline recomends and sells Hastings. The Mobile one filter is made by Champion for mobile one but is not a standard champion design. You can order hastings from redline for about $5.00 and it is a realy good filter with a high percentage of synthetic fibers. The PureOne and thHastins would have to be best buys for their semisynthetic fiber content and cost. IMHO

It's nice to know I'm not the only motorhead that stays glued to the TV and scanning the internet for information on oil. First I think it is best to consider the driving and road conditions, along with your driving style you are subjecting your Mopar to, and as to the interval you want to change your oil (or the convenience there of). Dodge (and common sense) says you should change your oil every 3,000 miles or 3 months if you are subjected to frequent short driving less than 5 miles, frequent driving in dusty conditions, trailer towing, extensive idling, or if more than 50% of your driving is at sustained high speeds during hot weather, above 90F. If none of the above applies then to change the oil every 7,500 miles. Dodge further recommends the use of an oil that meets oil quality certification and viscosity standards (API) and that the oil is an SAE Grade. The grade specified in the owners manual for my truck in the temperature range of 32F to -20F is 5W-30 and the use (with some temperature over lap) 10W-30 in the temperature range of 0F to 100+F. Dodge also recommends the oil filter be replaced at every second oil change or each 12 months … naturally they recommend their filter.

Having said all that my intentions are to treat my Dodge just like I have previous automobiles I’ve owned; including a ’90 Honda Civic 3 door coop with right at 300,000 miles (totaled but anticipate I’d of gotten at least double out of it) that was still getting 43 mpg just like the day I bought it from the dealer; a 81 Subaru station wagon with over 500,000 miles showing on the odometer (it stopped working) with only a slight drop in gas mileage (38 mpg) over it’s life span before selling; ’90 Chevy Lumina with 250,000 miles (I purchased this car used after a nasty divorce with 97,000) and have had the gas mileage increase with it from an original 25 mpg to 30 mpg; … and I could go on … The Dakota I just purchased (ultra clean) has right at 125,000 and came from the dealer with a fresh oil change using Castrol 20W-50. I am at this very moment changing the oil with the following: 1 Qt Dura Lube (I’m not a fan of “snake” oils but I’ve had limited success with this oil), 1 Qt of Castrol 5W30 Syntec, and will top off with 10W-30 Castrol and a virgin Wix Filter. I will run this oil for roughly 2,500 miles and (by then spring will be will under way with the day time temps in the 50’s and 60’s) then change it again with the same except replacing the quart of Dura Lube with a quart of 10W30 Syntec. I’ll probably stay with this unless there are some highway trips when I’ll increase the viscosity to either 10W-40 or 15W50. If I deviate from this I’ll run a mixture of Mobile 1 and Castrol, probably something like a quart of Mobile’s 0W-30 (yes I said “0”), a quart of Mobile10W-40 or 20W-50, and then top off with Castrol in the corresponding weight.

Incidentally, with respect to which grade to use … use a light grade 5W or 10W when it is cool outside and/or your driving is light, use a heavier grade when it is hotter outside or your driving style is rough (sounds like some of these guys are balls to the wall … and there’s NOTHING wrong with that!).

What I’m curious to know is if anyone has used a snake oil called “Z-Max” or it’s aviation counterpart that has Linkite in it?

Best of wishes to ya … and man … ya’ll sure do have some awesome machines!

oh ... almost forgot, change your oil filter every oil change. I had a chief in the Navy that changed the oil filter every 1,000 miles and added a quart of oil in an old slant six Dodge he drove (he did a regular oil change something like once a year)... the thing was was ancient, but didn't smoke and ran like new! Never a major repair either.

For what it's worth a filter doesn't cost that much extra ... espically when some of ya'll are running $9/qt oil.

op- I have heard about the Z-Max and I have heard excellent things about it. My buddy ran it in his TRD Supercharged 3.4L Toyota and loved it. I beleive they run mineral oil in airplane engines for break in, (correct me if Im wrong). Linkite is supposed to make a substantial difference in the wear of the engine.

Me, I run Mobil 1 10W-30. I use it for peace of mind. I probably wont keep my truck for the 60K+ miles. I change my mind a lot. Right now I want a RC 4.7L 3.92 LSD 5spd 2x4, but it would be dumb to sell my truck already, LOL.

One thing I noticed wasn't clarified re: oil changes is how months regardless of low miles one puts on our trucks.

I changed to Royal Purple 5w30 with 2700 miles around the September time frame, now have 5900 miles some 5 months later, and just changed the Mopar filter to a Purolater filter and topped off the oil, keeping the original oil from the Septermber oil change in...is this a bad thing?

Any time you change a filter you overall are best off to change the oil too, but anytime you change a filter you are definitely better off than no filter change at all. My kid brother drives me insane with his S-10 with him changing the oil every 2,500 mile (which we both agree on), but he will hee-haw around when it comes to changing the filter saying he gets away with not adding an additional quart of oil; my point to him is he just left a quart of contaminated oil in the system to contaminate the fresh 4 quarts he just added. It really comes down to a matter of what is efficient and/or cost prohibitive.

I have a Ford Ranger that takes spells where it will leak oil. Anytime I think I am going to have to add more than a quart of oil I just break down and add oil – anytime it looks like I am going to have to add oil to my other vehicles I change the oil. This includes when I’m on the road. I’ve been known to swing into a fast lube joint (and man do I hate to pay someone to do what I can do!) for just such a purpose.

Eh … I really think it’s up to you to decide in the end. If it were a perfect world we would all own spectrometers where we could pull samples of oil and monitor the contamination of the oil as we drive .. heck in a perfect world the gas and air would be clean!

Side note with respect to changing oil: add the quality of gas as an influence on the decision of whether or not to change the oil. I purchase virtually every tank from a small local supplier that sells a 10% alcohol blend in their premium grade. With this practice I’ve noticed the general color (which is indicative of its degree of quality) of the oil closer to that if its’ original state.

This reference (mentioned above by Marks DQC) is well worth looking at. I personally value the opinion of end users and independent studies.

I'm currently averaging 600 miles a month, have had the same oil in the truck for the past 5 months, with my driving habits fitting the schedule B or 7500 mile interval (no towing, no short trips, no extreme driving, etc), and the oil still looks pretty clean, always at the same level and pressure...so, guess I'll continue the current trend of at least a oil filter change every 3k miles and oil/filter change every 6 to 9k miles.

BTW, here in the NE, forget what the additive is in the gas during winter months, but I do notice my gas milage drops from 2 to 3MPG.

Gregory, I've heard of it causing some leaks after that many miles...just depends on your gaskets. If you do decide to make the switch, definitely go with a petroleum/sythetic blend for 1 or 2 oil changes first, like Castrol Syntec Blend. If you have no leaks, you should be good to go fully synthetic.

The whole idea behind synthetic oil is that the ester molecule is larger than its carbon chain cousin. The molecules lower surface tension and weaker covalent bonds are the real advantages behind the "synthetic". Given a larger molecule it would stand to reason the oil would be less likely to leak.

I'm a fan of combining the benefits of refined crude and synthetic oils, however I will not purchase manufacture blended oil. The reason being I've contacted two manufactures (and basically got the run around - it seems no one that answers the phones with respect to their products has a clue as to the engineering or chemistry behind them) neither of which would divulge the % of synthetic ester in their "blended" oil, one of which only saying it was less than 15% ester based. When you do the math you’ll be better to buy the oil and blend it yourself. The only argument the oil company can give against doing this is “they have special processes”. The bases are different, and it is labeled a “blend” so I doubt there is any special chemical reaction(s) the oils are subjected to. I feel this is a middle of the road approach (especially given I’m changing my oil ahead of the manufacturers’ recommendations).

There are a lot of myth's and hype out there
concerning Synthetic Lubricants.
I have tried every synthetic oil you can think of
and I have heard all kinds of promises from
various manufacturers but none of them impressed
me more than AMSOIL did.
AMSOIL was the first to develop an oil for
Automotive use that was certified by the API and
that has put them years ahead of anyone else.
AMSOIL has also been scrutinized more than any
other oil on the market due to the fact that they
claim up to 35,000 miles or one year between oil
change intervals (with the series 2000 0w-30).
I was one of their skeptics but tried it anyway
and with a lot of background research, lube oil
analysis and personal experiance with their
products ....... I'm still impressed!
AMSOIL was recently lab and dyno tested against
all of the leading synthetics by a lab contracted
by Fast Fours and Rotaries Magazine (July 1998)
and AMSOIL took top honors.
I also have a lot of other "proof" that will never
make me want anything else.
