Subject: Borg/Tremec T-5 in a Dak

Message:
I'm seriously looking into transplanting a T-5 into my 2001 w/ the 4.7 and multi-speed auto, but from what I've been able to learn so far, there is no bellhousing available for this engine, since the NV3500 apparently has an integral bellhousing built in to the trans.

Why a T-5? Because the gear ratios in the NV3500 are not exactly what I have in mind (1st-4.01:1, 2nd-2.32:1....), and even if I COULD find a NV3500 and re-gear it, I'd still be left with the truck-like shifting - no aftermarket peformance shifters available for it.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to make this work, or am I just dreaming too much?

Keisler Automotive in Knoxville, Tennessee makes a 6-speed for Dakotas, or can help you with questions about the NV3500. www.keislerauto.com

Thanks for the links, guys. It seems, however, that Keisler only makes bellhousings for the 5.2/5.9.... nothing for the 4.7 - just like everyone else. You'd think by now that these motors would be a little more mainstream.

So doesn't the T-56 (6-speed) have the same exterior dimensions as the T-5 or the T-45,TKO, or even the 3550? Seems like it would.. I wonder why Keisler wouldn't want to sell me one?

The T56 is differant dimensionally. It's longer and bulkier, and has an integral bellhousing. Go Here www.fortesparts.com/tremec.cfm

I think MoFinWiley has a 4.7 6-speed from Keisler. He had some tech problems, but worked out some of the bugs himself, it seems. Give Keisler a call or email for the latest info. They had a 408 stroker (LA engine) 6-speed RC Dak at their shop last year. Nice T-handle shifter. They were taking it to Bristol Dragway to wring it out.

I've tried - repeatedly - to get info from Keisler, but they're apparently not interested in my business (my dollars must be somehow different from other people's). Each phone call results in the same response: "We're too busy to answer your questions... give us your phone number, we'll call you back". They never do.

Also frustrating is the fact that NOBODY seems to be able to answer the simple question "is the bellhousing for the 4.7 the same as for the 5.2/5.9?". I may not be mechanically knowledgable, still... seems like someone would know... it either is or it isn't. If the Keisler kit is a "direct replacement" for the NV3500, shouldn't I assume that this will work with the 4.7?

This whole week has been nothing short of MAJOR disappointment, what with the Exotic Wood Dash kit (wrinkled edges, won't stick), local body shops that don't have enough confidence to do simple exhaust cutouts in a steel rollpan, endless waiting for distributor to actually send me the CORRECT front lower fascia - long since paid for, and NOW... a 1/2 gallon or more of water on my floorboard, and can't find the cause.

Yeah, it's been a great week - I think I might take a closer look at my insurance policy, cuz I'm getting pretty tired of all this crap.

I know... I'm whining, but couldn't at least ONE thing work like I paid for it to work? Sigh....

If the water in your floorboard is on the passenger side, sounds like you now have heater core problems too. Hope this helps.

Thanks, but it's not the heater core. If it was, there would be coolant - not water - on the floor, plus judging by the quantity of water there, the engine would've long ago overheated. Nope... it's coming from the firewall somewhere - I can watch it drip down the the floor after spraying water underneath. Must've been leaking since 2001.... there was A LOT of water.

I suppose I'll figure it out eventually, but I'm not looking forward to buying an overpriced replacement carpet from DC, and there are no aftermarket suppliers that I can find.

Hi,
I saw you request for some info on hooking up a T5 to your 4.7. Some time back, I asked the question about the 4.7 bolt pattern from a LOT of different people and never could get a straight answer. So.. I took a 3.9L V6 bellhousing I had laying around to a local boneyard and found a 4.7 sticking out of the mud. After plonking it onto the back of the block I found that all of the bolt holes except one in the 3 o'clock position lined up properly. That one can be modded if necessary. The 3.9L V6 has the same bolt pattern as the Mopar Small blocks. Does that help any? How about using an R154 out of an 88-92 Supra Turbo instead? Just use the Liberty 3.7L V6 bell.

Isn't there either a TSB or some other tech article out on the water coming into the cab from the passanger side firewall (coming from the A/C condenser)? I seem to recall that information...

Greg...

Thanks for the info, but I've decided to go all out. Keisler DOES make an entire "bolt-in" kit for the 4.7, so I just ordered the whole package (including the auto-to-manual kit) to install a brand new Tremec TKO-500. I guess my only issue with Keisler is now the 4-12 week wait for delivery.

Demon...

Yer absolutely correct - and that's exactly what it was. Thank you. Too bad I didn't check it a couple of YEARS ago... carpet was ruined, but at least it's fixed.

Broeheem, I've known the Keisler brothers for several years now, you should have good results. The 4.7 tranny swap is not that common yet, as you can imagine. One bright spot about Keisler is that they are die-hard Mopar fans. There are few places in the performance world today where Chevys and Fords take a back seat. There's a BUNCH of 60's-70's Chrysler muscle car owners grinning ear-to-ear when they shift into fifth gear.

Actually, the tremec swap for early Ford and Chevy muscle cars is pretty common these days. And it's a lot easier because the bellhousings havn't changed in 30 years. It can all be done with off the shelf parts, except for the cross member.
