Are you referring to handling or acceleration?

I bought a 04 4.7 AWD QC with LSD in December and
have put about 2200 miles on it. For comparison
purposes my car is a Porsche 968 and my wife
drives a 03 Jetta 1.8T with sport package. The
Dakota accelerates and handles very well for a
truck. It will not accelerate as quickly or
corner as well as either of the cars but it
weighs 4900 pounds and is twice their height!

I would think that the 2wd would be faster in a
straight line on dry pavement due to the lighter
weight and lower profile. Also it may corner
better due to the lower height.

But if the road surface is wet or otherwise
challenged the AWD is a great benefit. I was
only interested in AWD Dakotas after test driving
a 2wd on wet roads and finding that it spun the
tires more than my Porsche.

If I was looking for performance then a single
cab 4.7 AWD lowered back to stock height would be
my goal. Or fit the AWD gear to an existing RT.

I have an 02 QC AWD, but have never timed it, or run up against a 2wd QC Dakota.

My thought is that if the 2wd can launch reasonably hard with little to no wheel-spin, then it should easily win due to less weight.

If there is any wheel spin, the AWD should be able to hold on long enough to get to 60.

I have a 4.7 RC Sport AWD Handling PKg. 0-60-7.75 sec, quarter 15.75@89mph. Best handling truck I've ever driven. My wifes 1.8T Jetta probably isn't any quicker to 60, lots more top end though. Its a truck not a sportscar. Her Jetta will never pull 8000 lbs of hay and a flatbed either nor would my 68 911L Porsche.

Deerridge,

I would like to know more about the "handling package". Does it lower the Dakota from the 4x4 stance? I am very impressed with the 7.75 second 0-60 time.

The handling package has the heavier sway bars, big tires (265/70/16)and the wider wheels. Mine has the 3.92 rear end and all the heavier load springs too. Its pretty stiff compared to the QC you have. Plus I weigh in empty at 4000lbs. Actual weight was about 4500 when I got the times listed. I've never checked the G ratings on curves, but it sticks better than any other truck I've driven. I love the AWD. YOu just don't loose traction with it, good stuff.

Mine has the 265 tires and wider wheels. Not sure about the heavier sway bars. I have been impressed by how well it handles.

I had the truck on a scale on the way in and out of the local landfill. On the way out, subtracting my weight the truck weighed 4900 pounds.

My rear end is a 3.55, I bet the 3.92 makes a big difference 0-60.

I have an Intense Performance Gen II, Gibson headers and a custom PCM. The headers made a noticable impact on low end torque, particularly in towing. I may get the new superchips tuner too. I'm sure the 3.92 rear helps a bunch too.

I had a local guy put in the headers and do the PCM a couple years ago. It took him all day to do the headers. A real pain I gathered. He had to re-torque them and add lock washers later too. He also did the PCM. I had it changed a couple of times. I think from Texas Todds reports the Superchips tuner would suit me better, because you can change it yourself.

"Lock nuts on the headers". I'll have to heed that advice when i get some headers.

as far as 0-60 against a Turbo jetta. I raced one months ago (before swapping cams) and we raced from 3 stoplights in a row.
One time he'd jump me from the hole and I'd stick even but just behind. Another time I'd jump him and stay ahead. the last time we both spun through the light a little. I let off and hit it again and took off. he spun silly. Asked him at the next light what happened that time and he said he tried it with the traction control off.
Funny though. A heavy 4X4 (running in 2WD) against a lightweight turbo. About even in acceleration :-)
