Define "small amount". That varies greatly depending on who you are talking to. That would help alot.

Don't buy "cheap" modifications. Save your money and buy a better engine.

V8 Tb, RRer's, headers, or a chip or tuner. that's pretty cheap for you to feel the difference but it won't be a jaw dropper. BTW, you're not going to gain a "whole lot of horsepower" from any one or two small or cheap mods unless it's something like a supercharger or nitrous. and supercharger isn't cheap. you might look into nitrous though, but watch how much of a shot you put through it.

I have a 97 with the 3.9, my mods are F&B 48mm throttle body,360 air intake,1.7 roller rockers, ASP crank pulley,JBA headers with flowmaster dual outlet,3.92 sure-grip. Out of all these mods the throttle body gave the most noticable improvement.I'd save up and get a throttle body.

I have a stock 4 banger Chevy that will blow the doors off most of these V-8 Dakotas so I'm sure it would take only a few light mods for your 3.9 to catch up to the 5.2's and 5.9's

I would suggest that you do not buy the throttle body. The real performance guys know that they are over priced paper weights. If you are looking for engine mods check out the cams a www.krcperformance.com

Chv4, unless you have a new Cobalt, you ain't coming close to blowin the doors off of any V8 Dakota.

Cams are the best bang for the buck mod you can do other than nitrous. Throttle bodies WILL help, as will headers. Don't expect to run with a V8, though. The V6 is far from catching the V8. If you can't afford a V8 swap then definatly mod your V6. Any mods should be worth it, but shy away from throttle body spacers. A set of MSD plug wires will make your engine run smoother and should pick up about 1-5 horsepower all across the rev range. They arent much more than $50. Good luck with the truck.

The cheapest way to add a "whole lot of horsepower" just might be to trade in your 6 for a v-8.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

I was at the truck accessories store nearby yesterday, and some dude had what looked like a 2000 EC dak, but it had a huge hood scoop with 'hemi' on the sides as well as the current hemi badge in the appropriate place (i.e., in front of the front wheel wells).

Of course, I asked him 'that really got a hemi in it?'

He looked up with a smirk and said, 'naw, it's a 318.'

Didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

I just bought the factory badging for the I-4 engine that came with the 97-99 dakotas, and stuck it on my heavily modified 4.7. I pick a few fights now and then with ricers, then pick on them at the next light for being beat by a truck with a 4 banger, I just dont admit to have 4 more cylinders.

I cant believe anyone you race cant hear the roar of your V-8. also Why would you put 4 banger labels on your truck? sounds like you just pick races with other 4 bangers as thats the only cars/trucks you can beat racing.

You would be surprised how ignorant most people are when it comes to automotive dynamics. Just because a soccer mom has a V8 badge, she thinks she faster, ect ect ect... ricers are no exception, in fact they tend to be more retarded.

The little 4 banger badge does the trick when idling at a light, and some honda in the "jerk lane" believes he's going to toast me.

You have to have a little fun. It also makes rustang owners take a second look after you sail past them in third. clocked my third GT kill last night, more will follow. The badge is bait, and it catches chumps flies to dung.

My oppinion on the badging is, stick to what you have, modify all you like you still have a dakota sport or slt, etc.
As far as street racing goes, people eventually mature and grow out of that phase, most go through it, most come out alive, and some live to regret it .In the form of higher insurance premiums, high repair bills, or even worse living with being responsible for the death of another person, innocent or not.
Don't get me wrong I love racing, probably more then most on this site, but I know where it belongs.

yeah it is fun to put rice burners in their place. one thing I like about my dak is I dont have the V-8 logo on the side of my truck. so they dont know what I have in it. also most rice burners goes for the cosmetic looks for their cars. like those stupid muffler tips that sounds like someone blowing razzberrys. and that stupid big tach. thats bigger than their whole car. I have dusted many in my dak and its stock. dont get me wrong you can do amazing things with those 4 bangers but in the end there is no replacement for displacement =-Þ
