I am thinking of removing my fan, since I have the aux electric fan. The ? I have i this......Does the power you gain by removing the fan and putting in a 180 Tstat, make up for the lost power by the engine running a little warmer. So is it really worth it?

I took mine off on my '03 4.7L about 6 months back and kept the 195* thermostat. I've driven it in 100* weather here in Odessa,TX and have not had any cooling problems at all. The electric fan has done just fine so far. If you've got the AC on the electric fan runs constantly anyway.

I tried a search, but you must not understand what I am asking. As you know you loose power as your engine heats up, a cooler engine makes more power period!!!!!!! does the added power gained from the fan removal compensate for the increase in temp you will see.

you will not see any real increase in op temp. at least i haven't. had my clutch fan off for a year now w/ 180 t-stat. no significant increase in power though.

I removed my clutch fan on my '00 and kept the 195 stat. My truck doesn't run any warmer than it did with the fan clutch on. Even with the fan clutch if you're idling for a period of time you will still get warm enough to kick in the electric fan. With out the clutch I still never get above the point where the fan kicks in. I only put it back on for the winter because I have a plow on mine and it did run warmer with out the mechanical fan since the plow blocks the air flow to the radiator. If not for the plow I would just throw the fan away.

I pulled my fan and only notice the higher temps when I idle for a period of time...like in the drive through at Taco Bell!

I do have the 180* thermo installed and still see my temp gauge ease up to around 200/220 when sitting for a time. My electric fan does work so is probably why I haven't gone above that.

02,

I too got rid of it years ago, and I have a 180 t-stat.

You don't loose anything from getting hotter, cause it still runs cool.

Am I to understand you can just remove your clutch fan with no other mods. I have a 99, 3.9 V6 and the noise is annoying.

I finally got around to removing the fan earlier this last weekend, I kept the 195 Tstat for now it run the exact same temp as before even when stoped. I feel a little more throttle response and maybe a little HP, but now I can really hear my intake and exhuast at high RPMs, also it seems that I got about .75 MPG better so far so maybe this helped with gas.

I removed mine and have a 180 t-stat and a electronic fan control that cycles the fan just above the t-stat temp.

the temp gauge usually sits lower than stock EXCEPT if I am towing up a hill in which it never goes over half way and when I've gone off road using 4LO a lot (higher revs, low MPH) THEN my truck starts to get HOT. Actually had the sucker hit the "H" at one time! I threw on the clutch fan (I had with me) and it was fine the rest of that adventure.

Most of the time i am fine without the clutch fan. One furure mod would be to replace the single fan with a dual fan and mini shroud to pull air through ALL of the radiator when runing the electric fan(s). Then I'd stage the temperatures so the 2nd fan only came on at HIGHER temps or if the A/C was running (another logic circuit to build).

Hope that helps. Most people never overheat. Going offroading up serious sh*t seems to be the only problem. Click on my signature for my detailed mods.

Like TexasTodd, I've had my clutch fan off for over a year now here in NW FL and no problems. I do have a 180* Tstat also.

Just bought the wife a 05 Jeep Liberty with the 3.7L when I looked under the hood there was no clutch fan, just the electric one. You can see the threads on the water pump pulley just like the one on our V8s when you pull the fan off. I guess Jeep has already caught on to this tip/mod.

Hey 02Kota.
If, as you say,

"...a cooler engine makes more power period!!!!!!!"

how come this morning when my engine was at 35 degrees, it didn't feel like it had more power?

Greg, you can remove the clutch fan if you have the factory electric also. i'm not sure if the '99's had the electric or not.

our PCM affects your timing and fuel ratio until your engine is at a suitable temp. So you don't just go crazy and mess things up while its cold. thats why.....People also switch to a 180Tstat so things run cooler and allows your other mods to make more power.

Not nessessarily a COOLER engine. It's COOLER intake air temps (more air molecules in a given space) that matters.

Honestly, on a 4.7 Liter with thre plastic intake runners, I don't think running the 180* I have now (or the 160* I once tried) did anything at all for power. The engine DOES run cooler on the average and it doesn't get that cold in the valley of Arizona so I don't think I needed a 195* here.

That Liberty most likely has a electric fan covering more of the radiator, or at least having a better shroud around it. It also would kick on the fan earlier. I've got mine modded to come on about 185*.

GraphiteDak,
How do you mod your Aux fan to turn on earlier than 210-220, mine stays very cool now but summer on day will finally be here.

making one of these is the trick.

here it is in the project box.

All parts you can get from Radio shack.
LM339 Quad Comparitor.
It's easy. The comparitor IC has two inputs. You set refernece voltage on one side (using adjustable resistor so you can fine tune the temp later) and feed the variable voltage from the FACTORY Temp Sensor into the other input. When the voltage drops lower than the refernance voltage the output of the IC switches a transistor on which then powers the coil of a 30 amp relay.
It is VERY accurate. And no seperate sensor is needed. Mine has been working for OVER a year now.

My t-stat is a 180* and the fan control probably kicks on just higher than that.

Of course I hear some PCM programmers let you change the factory fan control with them then you wouldn't need this.
But this circuit would also work on older Dak's that didn't have a electric fan who want to add on. just connect to the engines coolant temp sensor and it works.
