One of my buddies has a 1999 Ford 2500 club cab 4X4 with a V10. He is always putting down dodge and talking about how fords are Gods greatest gift to man. I Drive a 2000 quad cab 4X4 with the 4.7. Both trucks are auto, and no mods. Do you think I could take him?

Very true. Don't know what I was thinking. Just a little to optomistic I guess.

Maybe so, but you never know until you try. His truck is heavier than yours. I too have a friend with one of those Ford v10s, but he's impressed with mine and has never offered to run me.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Yes...you should take him. That truck is a hog. I have one in my fleet. Very Torquey and it has 305hp, but is too heavy and geared to low to be able to keep up with you.

Depends how you structure the race.
You get about 18mpg on the highway he gets about 10mpg on the highway - I'm guessing the same size gas tank.
Make it a distance race - about 350mi and you should win

I ran my freinds F250 powerstroke with the go faster computer & huge exhaust a few months ago on the way home from the Bowling Green KY Mustang shootout. We both got into the throttle on the I24 on ramp & I had to lift at about 75 MPH, or risk rolling up under him. I was following him, & due to traffic, I couldn't pass. It probably worked out in my favor that he has 36 inch mudders, but it's still fun to rib him about not being able to get out of a lil' old Dak's way. Haven't messed with a V-10 yet.

get a dude with the current 2005 V10 Dodge to run him even, his big truck against the ford big truck. the current V10 Dodge is the Viper engine, the de-tuned V10 the put in them last year are no longer available so it ought to be quite a race, his 305 HP against the 500 plus in the V10. If you're gonna race, it might as well be apples against apples.

Still afraid to run him ? Might be a pretty fair race as it is, with your weight advantage.

Hey guys i hate to be the bearer of bad news but here are some numbers from the Jan. 2005 issue of Four Wheeler from their truck of the year review.

2005 Dakota Quad Cab Larmine 4x4, 4.7L (not HO) 5 speed auto and 3.92 gears. Ran the 1/4 mile in 18.18 at 75.00 mph.

Ford F-250 Super Duty w/super cab Lariat 4x4, 6.8L V-10, 5 speed auto and 4.10 gears. Ran the 1/4 in 17.37 at 78.86 mph.

These are actual test times and not just the factory published times. I know the Ford had 4.10's so maybe the Dakota would be just as fast if it had them too. Also they didnt get the High Output 4.7L, im sure the numbers would have been better. But that was the engine we've had since 2000. So it would be a close race.

Another note to bowhunter; the 2005 Ford V-10 got a 45 hp and 30 lb-ft increase this year. So you would have a better chance against the '99.

You WILL take him. Second, the new Daks are supposed to be heavier than the old ones. Not sure by how much. Four Wheeler mag editors cannot drive. bowhunter, your truck should be able to click off a 16.0 in decent weather. That F250 may be able to run a 16.5 at best.

If my truck ran a 18+ here at near sea level, I'd have to run it into a wall from pure disgrace!

I have heard that (up until 2004) 4X4 Daks run 16's all the time STOCK. 18+ is quite a jump slower!

I have to agree that I was shocked when i saw the numbers, but i do know that, like everybody said, the 2005 daks are heaver. I have never timed my 2000 4.7 4x4 std. cab Dakota at the track so im just taking everybodys word for it when you say that they will run in the 16's. To be honest im not up on track times for differnt vehicles. I will say this though we have a fleet of E-350 superduty vans with the V-10's where i work and i drive one everyday. Im sure the vans are heaver than the truck but i have to say they are pretty quick when their empty.

Do they offer different transmissions for the v10?
I know the f450 that I drive (v10) 4 days a week is pretty quick off the line but runs out of steam up top. by up top I mean above 3,000 rpm. Mines also a 99.I think in all fairness it would be a close race.
with coparable set-ups I think the ford would probably pull ahead. They only have 305hp but somewhere in the neighborhood of 425ft lbs of tq.
and a lot more weight.

The one that Fourwheeler tested had a 5 speed auto, i think they also offer the 6 speed manual. Im not sure how many speeds our 2003 E-350 has, once it gets up to speed its hard to tell when it shifts. The 2005 V-10's have 362hp @ 4750rpm and 457 lb-ft @ 3250rpm

The 2005 4.7 was tweeked by D-C for fuel economy. I wonder if something was lost in the power curve along with it? A 2005 QC weighs 60 pounds more than a 1997-2004, but the 2005 CC is 150 pounds more.

Yea it makes you wonder how they got those 1/4 times. I wouldnt think 160 lbs would make that much difference.
