Subject: 4.7L Superchips Tuner Ouch
IP: Logged

Message:
Dang! Received my tuner today (from a group buy here) but it won't work on my truck! Says it needs an update from Superchips. Guess I'll have to call tomorrow. Can't figure out what'd be different on my truck though. 2002, 4 speed(overdrive) auto, all wheel drive, 4-wheel antilock brakes. Only mod's are a single stainless catback, trueflow intake, and a supplemental electric fan rather than the clutch fan. Been waiting for the 4.7 version for awhile -- guess I'll be waiting a bit longer now!! Anyone else receive one yet and have problems or good results?

daffy, my email service where I've got all my purchase info is down right now, but I bought it for $305 in a group purchase. I don't think that it's officially released yet. It's actually the number 3715 that they've had out for all the other engines...they've finally added programming for the 4.7L. (Apparently just not quite right for my particular configuration!). I'm pretty sure that they work for the 98-2003 model years. I think that the group buy is pretty much over, but if they've had any cancelations maybe you could sneak into it if interested. I could find out more info in the morning (when hopefully my email is back on!)for you if you are. Regardless, I'm sure that they'll be officially released soon...maybe they just want to sell off stock of the older version first? I mainly want mine for towing, which I won't be doing for awhile, so it's not a huge deal if I've got to send it back in for reprogramming.

Daffy, Where ya been? Guess you haven't checked the boards recently about this tuner.

I'm on the list, it'll come any day.

I've already lined up a dyno to get a before and after. I'd like to justify keeping it, if you know what I mean.

01 4.7, 5spd(MANUAL), ETC., ETC.

Jon, 4 speed auto? Oh, you got one of those?

Read an article on the Superchips Tuner in Dodge World Mag. Loaded it on a 4.7 Ram. 4hp. Not really worth 300+$ is it??

Texas, it'll be interesting to see your results. I can't do anything about mine not working as Superchips is off 'till next week. And yes, the Auto trans! Bought my Dak used but got a great deal and it came configured mostly how I wanted it, including the tow package and anti-lock brakes all around.
Nips, When did you test yours? I didn't think that anything had come out for the 4.7L 'till now.

If it would allow me to bump my rev limiter to 6700 or so and adjust the speedo for tire size, etc. I'd pay $300 for one.
And with some mods, NOT a stock RAM, maybe there would be more than 4HP gained. Like when you've got cams and other goodies that would work really well at 6500 RPMS where we are held back at the moment.

sorry guys... I read some of the "superchips release daye") thread, back when it was getting off topic. So I never really chccked back after the start of december... I usually am pretty good about asking obvious questions :-) sorry and thanks for the help! ;-P the part# is 3715 right? Is there still some room in the group buy?

I'm liking what I have read so far about the 6700+RPM rev limiter!

You can't manually adjust the shiftpoints but, according to the user manual, you "gain enhanced transmission tuning." That was one item I wanted to try out, as I was hoping by "enhanced" they at least meant firmer! Anyway, the way I read it, the shifting is adjusted according to whatever enhancement level you choose (ie Performance or Towing or 87 Octane), but you can't individually make further tweaks of your own.

I was a test truck donor for SuperChips and got my tuner just before Xmas and have already installed it. The performance option woke my truck up from the 102k mile coma that it has been in for some time. I noticed a day/night difference when I laid into the pedal from a stop.
When the stealership stuck me with the "death flash" a couple of years back, my truck became a serious dog from then on, it wouldn't even spin the tires except in the rain. Now I can lay 15' of rubber from a stop (and NO I am not power braking it).

I am a caterer on the side and had to load my truck down with what I estimate to be about 200# of coolers, food, and kegs yesterday so I switched from the "performance" program to the "Towing/Performance" option before leaving and noticed even more power in the low end (and that was with the extra weight)...I also noticed the gas gauge slipping down too. I am running 93 octane in case anyone is interested ($2.04 gal in Melbourne beach, Fla).

My tuner only offers "Adjust Rev Limiter" and "Adjust Tire Size" as additional option at this time. I'm also hoping for a "Adjust Shift Point" option in the near future as I would love to adjust that part too.

Give the SuperChips guys some time. They are not wanting to put out something right away that many of you will have problems with right out of the box.

Damn. I just dropped some coin building my computer system (for music/navigation) or I'd be down to buy one of those programmers!

I would like to change my rev limiter and when i drop in them 4.10 gears that would save me from paying the stealership for the speedo correction.

Keep us updated. Starting to sound good :-)

That's good to hear, Izzy. Right now I can't get mine to work and, when I call superchips, all I get is a message that they're closed for the holidays until January 4th! Uh, it's the 5th now! I hope they come back from vacation soon so I can unload this thing, either permanently or just to get it fixed!

I just recieved the tuner for my 01 4.7 Dak QC, I am kinda torn with the tuner, what I mean is that The tuner gives you the option to tune the truck with a 87 octane load or a "performance" load which requires you to upgrade to premium fuel. I have installed the program using the 87 octane load and have noticed an imporvement in performance in my truck, it seems a bit more powerful and zippier and suprizingly it seems smoother at the same time. Now the reason that I am torn is that I wasnt aware of the fact that in order to get the vast improvements that they claim you have to start using Premium fuel which is quite costly. I know that in order to get more power you have to pay for it but a V-8 sucking down premium fuel might be a bit too costly for me. I am going to run a tankfull with the 87 octane load and see what it does for my fuel economy and then I am going to load the Premium load and run premium fuel and see what my miles per gallon/-Vs-/Cost/-Vs-Horsepower increase and see if it is worth it to use the premium load. I actually cant wait to tow something to use the Towing Load.
I will let you guys know what the outcome to my dilema is.

I don't understand your dilema. The difference between 87 and 91 around here is only 20 cents. If i fill up when the gas light goes on its about 15-16 gallons. That's 3 bucks. Three bucks for added performance, hellz ya.

No sheet.
I rarely ever use 87 in mine anyway,. Dunno why but I usually just put in Power Plus, the 89 stuff.
I once heard from a friend in the business that the mid grade can actually be closer to premium so there is really no reason to buy premium if you can get away with the mid grade stuff.

Try that. If it don't pre detonate, you're ok :-P
I'm sure the PCM will adjust if it does.

There are knock sensors in the 4.7 HO motor; but not in the regular 4.7 - so be careful. Your regular 4.7 PCM will not adjust for detonation as you think. That said, you might want to try running your truck at the higher setting on lower grade fuel to see what it does -any detonation, change it right back to the lower setting. Not sure how the spark advance you are getting from this would compare to the Leach flash I have on mine; but I've found I only need to run high test when towing. Just remember - any detonation you can hear is bad, don't run like that.

Yeah. Under a greater load (like towing) would definitely have more chance at detonation.

Now Kowalski, to remember correctly. You got the flash where you actually had to SEND in your PCM right?
So you're pretty stuck with the settings you got.
But you like the performance it gave I'm sure.
I'd run premium or power plus if I had to if I had a flash vs. running cheap gas and not getting the mod.

It would be nice to have a programmer though to make changes yourself. Keep us all updated.

Oh, i looked last night and they still don't have the 4.7 listed on their site.
Is this still a limited thing for now?

Yes, I'm very pleased with the amount of advance the flash came with; also have a spare boneyard one with stock settings if I need it. I posted how much advance it was set to when I got it but have since forgotten, might be interesting to compare. Mine does fine with regular, the aluminum heads will tolerate advance pretty well.
